Chevy Spark First Look

Spark1

We were a bit peeved GM didn’t roll out the Chevy Spark at the Detroit auto show, instead holding it for the Geneva show in March. Today, the company released new details about the car, including more photos (below) and drivetrain information for Europe. It still hasn’t revealed any specs about the U.S. version, slated for a 2011 on-sale date. Yeah, 2011.

The new photos reveal a very stylish interior for a car slated to be extremely affordable. From what we can make out, though, the gauge cluster looks very small. No images of the seating configuration or cargo area were released.

At 143 inches long, the four-door Spark is shorter than a two-door Toyota Yaris. The company says it will feature standard safety features like stability control and side curtain airbags.

i prefer the Ford Fiesta!!

No rear door handles? suicide or clam shell?

Dan,
the handles are in the rear door window, kind of like a Jeep Compass.

GM has got to be hoping gas is $4.50 a gallon by 2011 so they can actually sell some of these. If its anywhere near today's prices this thing will be nothing more than a niche vehicle.

Depending on the price, I could see this becoming a mild hit. Probably not though.

yes D, GM is scrambling to have another hastily slapped together 'also ran' to counter the incredibly well done and time tested ford fiesta. i doubt very much they will be able to pull it off with an all new vehicle in this economic climate with their current financial crisis. they should have taken a cue from ford, and started with the corsa instead of from scratch.

Cars this small should not be made to carry up to 4 passengers plus gear. It’s a dangerous situation waiting to happen when you’re over capacity in cars like this. The maximum passenger rating on this should only be 2, one in the front and one in the back to balance the rear.

On a lighter note, I think I just found my lost Micro Machine from a few years back.

Is this the Aveo replacement?

DodgeFan

Don't know if it will be an Aveo replacement since Aveo has more interior room than cobalt. I do know that the Spark will be made by Daewoo if my memmory serves me right.

i think this would make a great second vehicle for those families that own suvs or minivans (which aren't that mini anymore). you see a lot of people driving around in big suvs or minivans all by themselves.
