Would You Buy a Buick?

Buicklacrossegrille_2

Tonight at midnight EST, Buick will drop the veil on its all-new 2010 LaCrosse sedan. It’s the largest leap the brand has made to reach new buyers with its sedans. For the past few decades, Buick has been seen as a car company for the senior set, but that changed with the introduction of the Enclave crossover in 2007.

Would a competitive sedan get you into a Buick dealership to cross-shop with Acura, Lexus and Lincoln?

No, Buick is still like Oldsmobile and Lincoln... an old person's car!

If they stick close to the Electra concept it should be a really good car. I hope they copy Cadillac's lead and make their future cars more sporty.

The only time Buick attracted me was when they made the Apollo sports car and the Skylark GS series muscle cars. Some of the Riviera models were tastefully done also. Otherwise, chalk Buick up as boring. When I was a kid they were considered a "doctor's car".

No Buick for me now, later, or ever. There's far too many other nicer cars in today's market other than Buick. Funny thing is my father wouldn't buy a Buick either, and he's in his 70's.

People said that about Cadillac's a few years back...

Adam

My parents wouldn't even buy a Buick. The only person I know that has one is my grandma. It's all about perception. In the future Buick will have no market and it will go the way of Oldsmobile.

My brother in law traded in his range rover for an Enclave a year ago and loves it. He could obviously afford something pricier but liked the looks for a family hauler.

Good design will always sway people to brands they wouldn't consider.

The LaCrosse is a great looking car that needs to have more confortable seats. The image of Buick is starting to change but not fast enough. Let's see what the 2010 model has to offer.

GR

Buicks are wonderful if you want a comfortable car. The Enclave is beautiful. I'm eager to see the new LaCrosse. I'm sure I won't buy one but it's going to be interesting to see what Buick does with this platform.

Sorry for the tease here but...
If it's priced like the outgoing model with the engines it's packing and the looks, I think the 2010 will sell really well. If it's Less than a TSX from Acura or Accord EX-L? It might do well.

Wendi

Have you seen the Enclave? Sat in it? It is now my dream family car.

SouthTX

A name is nothing anymore, a lot of people are buying Hyundays instead of Toyotas...

Tony

I agree. Consumers now are aducated people. They know whats going on. Not like old days, "I get Ford because my father said it is the best."
I Buick will be reliable and attractive car people will buy.

One thing I don't understand is Cadillac and Buick. Both luxo divisions. Why need two such divisions?

pierrek

I'd rather walk.

J

Do I want to be caught by others thinking I am driving a grandpa's car?

That's the answer for will I buy a Buick.

Idaho Guy

It goes way beyond Buick. I wouldn't buy a GM product. I've been burnt too severely (after purchase service) by GM to ever consider this manufacturer. Ford yes. GM not no, but he11 no.

jg

1. Buick scores higher in reliability than Acura, and tied Lexus in last year's JD Power survey.

2. Look around: the new grandpa car isn't a Buick, it's the Toyota Camry! Younger people are buying the new Buicks, like the Enclave.

J

jg
The Enclave is not a car.
Just like the Terraza.

Tony

J, he is right!

Grandmas do drive Camrys and Corollas

J

Tony,
Grandpas still drive Buick though.
Oh, did I ever mentioned that I disagree the Camry is an old folk's car?
Corolla, hm...that's kind of divided there.

i always liked the '97-'04 Regal, rented a few & it drove pretty decent, if not a bit "floaty".

If I'm gonna drive an older persons car, I'll drive a Caddy. But I'm only 42 so neither of them appeal to me.

Average age of CAdillac and Buick owners is on the way down. Average age of Toyota, Lexus and Honda owners is on the way up. How many young people do you see driving any Lexus model outside of the IS?

J

sheth,
Just to name the first one: My cousin age 26 is driving a 07 ES.
His girlfriend: 06 LS.
Do we have to keep counting?

SouthTX

My grandfather drives a Lexus and he is 75...

I am 38 and bought my current Buick (2006 LaCrosse CXS) at 36. The 2010 Buick LaCrosse looks to be a fantastic car that will sell for Buick.

I have no delusions of perceptions changing overnight. GM dug themselves this perception hole over a few decades. Lifting themselve out of it will take time too.

The Lexus enthusiasts site currently has over 98 thousand members. The GM sites that I visit? One has just 3 thousand members and the other has under that. And that's GM as a whole.

Hey, what's all this ageism? Older people like to drive, spend money, have fun, etc. Some of you seem to be buying based on advertising, whim, peer pressure, or whatever. Consider this: We are losing the availability of the column shift just because folks think it's cool to reach down to shift, like we were driving a sports car, etc. A column shift is handier. Or we need "bucket" seats so we can go around corners fast. Hey, think of the environment, inside and out. A bench seat gives you a lot more room, and allows you to get out of the car either way. And, its a better seat for romance.

Well that settles it. Lexus must sell more vehicles than GM and the average Lexus owner is 30 year old. I dont see anyone under 60 driving the ES350 or LS460 or SC430.

Are you kidding me? My wife accompanied me on a business trip, and we rented a car in Miwaukee - it was a Buick. After driving the Buick more than 1,000 miles, we both said, "We gotta get one of these." We are early 30's and never even thought about driving a Buick until that trip. Now we own a Buick with 67,000 miles and no problems. It is the best highway cruiser I have ever driven.

Now that I've seen the '10 Lacrosse and the '11 Regal, the answer is yes. I'd cross shop.

For one, Acura, Lexus, and Lincoln are just too expensive. I can't afford one. I checked out a Lacrosse that was around $28k, and it was much nicer than I was expecting.

Both new Buicks are available with AWD and are still affordable.

Sure, there's a stigma and image with Buick that they want to shed. Remember the letters GS? That's a good start.

I'm 40, and I'll go drive them.

The only thing that sours me to GM is the bailout.
