Winter Weather Leads to Surge in Towings

0206_snowstorm_cars

If you live in a part of the country that experiences winter in all of its fury, be careful when parking your car on city streets.

Snow emergencies often lead to towing splurges because cities need their emergency vehicles to have unlimited access to roadways. This past week 200 car owners in Milwaukee had very bad starts to their holiday seasons when their cars were towed. Hundreds of drivers in Albany and Rochester, N.Y., suffered similar fates.

Depending on the city and garage, towing costs $100-$200 per car. Expect to part with an even larger chunk of cash if your car is snowbound and the tow truck operator has to work to get it out.

If you don’t have access to a garage, your best bet is to move your car to an authorized street as soon as the blizzard gets underway. With the way this winter is going, there will be plenty of opportunities to perfect your plan in the next few months.

Every time I see some poor car plowed in I cringe to think what it will take to get the car free. My back hurts just thinking about it.
