Recall Alert: 2007-08 Mini Cooper S

Minipipes

BMW is recalling 28,450 Mini Cooper S cars from the 2007 and 2008 model years due to centrally located tailpipes that protrude too far past the rear bumper. If the tailpipe is hot and someone walks by, they could be inadvertently burned.

The recall will begin in January, and Mini dealers will replace the tailpipe with a shorter one free of charge.

Owners can contact BMW/Mini at 800-831-1117 with questions.

In a situation like this, would the owner be at fault? Who’s dumb enough to walk so close to protruding tailpipes? If that’s the case, then all motorcycles, especially Harleys would need to have theirs “shortened”. This shouldn’t be a recall; some people like the protruding tailpipe look.

Hogwash. It was stupid of BMW to make the pipe stick so far out in the first place. The pipe on a Harley is up high where you can see. This one's way low where it's not easy to see. People just walking by a Mini with these pipes parked in tight quarters could be burned. Plus, they're at the trunk. Does BMW not realize that things put in a trunk most likely will be removed upon arrival at the destination, when the pipes are hot? And that most people will do that from near the center, where they can best reach anywhere in the trunk? If not, then perhaps they should be prohibited from selling cars in the U.S. until they learn.

Looking for help with my Mini Clubman and snow. Do most mini drivers put on snow tires? If so, what is recommended?
