Ford Taurus X, Mercury Sable Cancellations Confirmed

Taurusxsable

Reports hit the web last week that not only was the Taurus X crossover expected to be terminated this spring, but that the long-running Mercury Sable sedan would cease production at the same time. This morning, Ford confirmed that news with us: Both will indeed stop production this spring.

At next month’s Detroit auto show, Ford will display an all-new Taurus sedan intended to replace the current model, which shares most of its parts with the Sable. There’s no word on whether a new Sable will come eventually, but things don’t look good.

There’s still talk that Mercury will get more of its own products, but there have been no official announcements on that front. The most-rumored is a convertible based on the European Focus Cabriolet.

The Taurus X lost its reason for being after the Ford Flex was released this past summer.

yeah bringing back those retro names really helped!!!

Anon,
I was thinking that too. They could have completely waited with the Taurus name change until this new generation one debuts next month.

I think that would have saved them money with all the rebranding etc. However, I think because they gave them all facelifts at the time, the new names might have added some pr mojo and moved a few more cars. They did get a pretty big sales boost after the facelifts. Sable actually had sales go up last month. One of the few that did.

How annoying. I LOVE the Taurus X. I have the older version (Freestyle) and I was just biding my time until I could talk the huz into getting the new version.

I was completely anti-American car until we drove-then-bought the Freestyle. Ford actually got that model right. This is really too bad.

Gina, you should try the Flex

I would love to buy a Flex, if the price on them wasn't so jacked up and then filled with deal-added garbage like $,$$$ textured side stripes.

Cj

skinner,
It's the "mini" of crossovers what do you expect? lol ;)

i think is a great idea, those cars are not worth it, resale value is blah n for the prices they are at, i prefer getting a japanese car which maintains their value n will last a lifetime.

What is the significance of the Mercury brand in the marketplace anyway? If it’s not much, then Ford should just kill it like GM did with Oldsmobile. Ford’s resources could be better put to use.

I agree on the diminished value of Mercury as an separate brand. My two cents: since everyone knows Mercury is just a high end Ford, convert the Mercury name to the highest trim level for Fords, e.g. Ford Taurus SE, SEL and Mercury edition. They could retain some of the Mercury styling cues they've established in the last decade, maintain the semi-upscale brand equity, and reduce advertising, product development and dealership costs.

Ford Edge, Ford Flex, Ford Taurus X = same thing. Slow selling, unattractive, boring Ford products. Ford could deep six the entire Mercury brand and barely anyone would notice.

Lori

I am glad I purchased a Taurus X when I did. I think the Flex is ugly and I told the owner of my local Ford dealer that fact. I love my X.

Satish,
please do a little research- the Edge is NOT on the same platform as the Flex and "X". Also, the edge is one of the bestsellers in its class.
