Hyundai has announced that its 2009 Elantra Touring will start at $17,800. This puts it well behind competition like the 2009 Scion xB, which starts at $15,750, and the Pontiac Vibe, which starts at $16,100.

The Elantra Touring is a five-door version of Hyundai’s Elantra Sedan and comes with several different option packages listed after the jump. The price doesn't include the destination charge of $695. Hyundai says the Elantra Touring will be available at dealerships in the first quarter of 2009.

Touring M/T - Five-Speed M/T with B&M Sport shifter - $17,800
Touring A/T - Four-Speed A/T - $18,600
Touring M/T - Five-Speed M/T with B&M Sport shifter - $19,300
Touring A/T - Four-Speed A/T - $20,100

i think u made a mistake with the prices above??!! & where's the Jump??

Roo

This is quite a price jump from prior generations! I've had a 2000 Elantra Wagon and 2002 Elantra GT hatch. The Elantra GT started at $12,999 and included leather, foglights, all the power accesories, side airbags, and alloy wheels.

Hyundai's quality is getting better and that may justify the higher price. However, the GT was a well-built, stylish, roomy, and fun-to-drive car. I loved the car for what it was. The fact that it was cheaper than the competition was just icing on the cake. Seems like many other Elantra GT owners felt the same way.

$18k is a big jump from that car and from the current Elantra sedan. Hope that doesn't hurt this car's chances of survival

i think they should've kept the "I30" name of the Euro model cuz this looks NOTHING like the sedan!!

The 2009 Vibe base price of $16,100 is for a basic car without air conditioning, power windows, power locks, or cruise control. (The Elantra Touring comes standard with all that stuff, and pretty much everything you'd want.) For the Vibe, adding AC adds $950, and adding power locks/windows/cruise adds another $945, bringing the Vibe price to $17,995 -- more than the Elantra Touring. Even at that price, it still lacks equipment the Elantra Touring has, like aluminum wheels. If you can get past the box thing, the Scion xB is a pretty good deal, but I prefer the design of the Elantra, and I like Hyundai's warranty.

Z,
Don't let facts get in the way of your story telling. Last week my wife and I purchased a Pontiac Vibe for our daughter. It cost $16,300 (excluding tax) and has the 2.4L engine, power everything, moonroof, and a/c.

$17,995 - my ass!

J

Don't forget that MSRP and the purchase price you can haggle are two very different numbers! The MSRP on your 2.4-liter Vibe was not $16,300.

Zensar

J - Why do you feel the need to point out that the MSRP was not $16,300 when the previous poster never stated that it was. A little reading comprehension goes a long way.

The Pontiac Vibe is a Big 3 Product being sold at the end of the year. It's no wonder a great deal was had on it. Additionally, the Vibe has been on lots a while. The Elantra GT isn't even available for purchase yet.

The only problem I see with this car is fuel mileage. It is not good for the class.

IMO: The 2009 Elantra Touring (106.3-inch wheelbase) is more like a family station wagon whereas the 2009 Pontiac Vibe (102.4-inch wheelbase) is more a sporty five-door. Yes boyz, four inches can make ALL the difference!

Jason

I remember when Saturn moved their cars more upstream as far as pricing goes. Of course comparing Saturn and Hyundai now is similar to comparing a grape (which might turn in to a raisin) and an orange.

I think Hyundai is taking a big risk by moving this car in to the Sonata price range. Remember what Nissan did with the Altima and Maxima? People started buying more Altima´s because there was little justification to move to the Maxima when you had similar powertrains, equipment and room.

BOB

First I should tell you that the Vibe mentioned is 16,000 with all the bells and whistles. I own a 03 Vibe and the new ones come with everything as I went to the dealer and checked the situation. That car is spectacular but I will not buy another one as I don't like the fact that they changed the body. I am not kidding. I might buy the Hundai after I get to a dealer as it's specs are attractive and get this, if you buy something while on business you can take it off your taxes. Believe me-I know.

Zensar, I think he probably pointed that out BECAUSE THE WHOLE ORIGINAL POST WAS ABOUT--WHAT?--MSRP. Why don't you not point out about comprehensive reading if you're not comprehending? Julien was both showing his ass and his ignorance by talking about facts when the MSRP on a Vibe 2.4 with a sunroof would be about $19,500 AND in this market similar discounts would likely quickly be available on the Elantra Touring, meaning the facts are in FACT on J's and Z's side.

the koreans have no shame when it comes to design. this car looks just like an astra. name any kia/hyundai car besides their bottom of the barrel and it has a quality manufacture design precedent. borrego/explorer, spectra/corolla, amanti/mercedes, sonata/accord, genesis/mercedes. i understand an asian company not wanting to take risks in an american market, but come on.

Derrick G,
I suggest you seek anger management therapy and while you are at it invest in an education. Not only are you wrong about the application of comprehension but you're also angry. Let me guess, you love rap and watching NBA games.

I hope they sell this new touring model in the GLS trim level (in the 16k range) for 2011. I have a 2005 GLS Elantra hatchback (5 speed) that I paid 11,600 before tax. Has been an excellent value car. Very versatile, it is a commuter and I can haul alot in the back and can even pull a small garden trailer. I will be looking to replace around 2011. Why does Hyundai force an extra 3k of leather and wheels upgrades? I guess that is where the profit is.

cj

Julien, "Z" was talking about the Vibe's MSRP, because, you know, this article is about the Elantra Touring's MSRP. He's comparing apples to apples here.

People aren't going to pay MSRP prices for an Elantra Touring, just you didn't pay MSRP for your Vibe (which according to their own web site starts at $17,440). Get it? I don't know how hard this is for people to comprehend.

With the hyundai, you are also getting 2 more years of bumper to bumper warranty,a 10yr. 100k powertrain warranty, rodside assistance for 5 yrs., standard ESC and the Hyundai assurance plan. Besides, A regular Elatra sedan is priced in the mid 17's without traction control, electronic stability control, or alloy wheels(gls). And in the mid 18,s with those things(se model), and was rated a consumer reports top ten pick. Best in its class. Why wouldn't the touring model be a little more??

i still don't understand the above prices?! Are there designations like SE or what???
