Minivan Deals Can Be Had in Bad Economy

The economy may or may not be in its death throes, but the kids still need to go to soccer practice. (Or various other activities. Perhaps dance lessons?)

News has been focusing on falling SUV and truck sales, but the minivan is also in a slump as of late. For prospective minivan buyers out there, we went through our incentives list and checked out the deals available. Some are significant, like the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country getting $3,500 cash back and the 2008 Kia Sedona’s $5,000 or 0.0% financing for 60 months.

There are cash-back deals on some 2009 models as well: The 2009 Nissan Quest gets $2,500 cash back or 2.9% financing for 72 months, while the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan has a nice little $1,000 deal. See the list below for the models we found, or check out our full list of regional incentives here

  • 2008 Chrysler Town & Country: $3,500
  • 2008 Nissan Quest: $2,500 or 2.9% for 72 months
  • 2009 Nissan Quest: $1,500 or 3.9% for 60 months
  • 2008 Kia Sedona: $5,000 or 0.0% for 60 months
  • 2008 Hyundai Entourage: $3,000 or 0.0% for 60 months
  • 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan: $3,500
  • 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan: $1,000
  • 2008 Honda Odyssey: 0.9% for 36 months, 2.9% for 60 months
  • 2008 Toyota Sienna: $0-$2,000 or 0.0% for 60
  • 2009 Toyota Sienna: $0-$500 or 0.0% for 36

We've owned a Kia Sedona and a Dodge Grand Caravan. I would only recommend them to Osama Bin Laden. The Kia dealer was great, however after it went through it's third trans in less than a year we sued and won under our states lemon law. Dealer good, Sedona bad. We turned around and purchased a fully loaded '08 Grand Caravan thinking we were getting a great deal. It turned out to be a bigger lemon than the Sedona (no fun driving 80mph and the van stalls for no reason). The worst part was our Dodge dealer tried to not document the various electrical issues so there wouldn't be much of a paper trail. We managed to file a grievance and at a arbitration meeting Chrysler bought back the Caravan as they wanted to avoid having it documented as a lemon. We feel sorry for whomever ends up buying the van as we were told Chrysler would have the right to re-sell it. We wanted to buy a Honda but the two dealers we visited were so sleazy we took it off our list. We ended up buying a Toyota Sienna and could not be any happier. The dealer was very professional and even brought to our attention an extra $500 regional rebate that did not show-up on our buyers report. I can see why our neighbors are so crazy about their Toyota's. They do feel like they are built to last for the long-haul.
