Honda Dials Back Odyssey, Pilot Production
Honda will scale back production of its new Pilot SUV and Odyssey minivans by 32,000 units to compensate for shifting consumer demand. The loss in family-hauler production will be made up by increasing output of the popular Accord sedan. Sales of the Accord are up 2.4% this year through September.
While increased Accord production won’t impact supply in the states — Honda will simply import fewer Japan-built Accords — fewer Pilots and Odysseys will mean a tighter supply if demand returns. Honda will also be able to keep incentive spending down for those two models.
Honda says that with this increase in Accord production, it will now be producing more than 80% of the cars it sells in the U.S. domestically.

My wife and I purchased the Accord over the Pilot about two months ago. This was not an easy decision to make as we tend to keep our cars for seven years. With the kids graduating from college next year we thought a car would make more sense, long-term. We love the 270hp, the handling, interior quality, and the typical Honda fit and finish. My only complaint would be the car lets in a little to much road noise when driving above 85mph. I'm glad we had a dealer who when asked his opinion recommend we go w/ the Accord as the trend he was seeing was that of people returning to cars over both suv's and vans.
Driving above 85 mph? Slow down and you'll increase fuel efficiency. If everyone slowed down, we would reduce our dependence on fossel fuels and cut greenhouse gasses. In addition, it's much safer. I guess I'm the only one in the country that drives the speed limit.
boeingboy,
You are driving at the speed limit?
Geez, is it the upper limit, or the minimum limit?
I have a '08 Accord V6 and often drive 85-90 on the New Jersey Turnpike, often to stay with traffic. Even at that speed I often achieve 26-27 mpg. Honda's multi-cylinder deactivation works like promised and other than a green 'eco' light on the dashboard I can't even tell when it's taking place. Now that's technology!
If you want to cut greenhouse gases start with Al Gore and his private jet or simply ask John Edwards to move out of his 30,000 square foot home!
