Redesigned 2009 Audi A4 Priced at $32,700
Audi announced pricing today for redesigned versions of its A4 sedan and wagon. The 2009 A4 sedan will start at $32,700, while the Avant wagon lists for $34,500, not including an $825 destination charge. That's nearly $3,000 more than the outgoing 2008 sedan's base price and about $1,500 more than the outgoing wagon's. The cars arrive at Audi dealerships later this summer.
For the extra cash, you get a completely restyled exterior and a new interior that more closely resembles the cabin of the A4's larger sibling, the A6. The A4's standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder also makes more horsepower and torque than before; it's rated at 211 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque. Sedans are offered with front- or all-wheel drive, while the Avant wagon is only available with all-wheel drive.
The A4 line is Audi's best-selling series by far, which makes this launch critical for the automaker. The new A4 looks like a solid contender in the entry-level luxury segment; we'll have more to report when we drive it later this month. If you want to see and drive one for yourself, Audi says some dealers will have A4s available for test drives in a little more than a week.

The A4 is certainly a decent and fun car, but not a good value at that price. With options you'll be looking at $40,000. IMO you should be able to get an A6 for those prices.

The A4 is the new modern day Saab - a secretary mobile. Drop the wimpy 4 cylinder turbo and stick a V6 in it. The Maxima and TL runs circles around the A4. Audi needs to get with it.

I remember when Audi used to be known as the affordable German car company. I can't imagine why anyone would purchase a $35-40k Audi A4 when you can get a G35. The G35 just exudes power. I agree with the other poster about the A4 becoming known as a secretary car.

Not even just the G, the Audi isn't even price competitive against it's more prestigious German rivals. It's the same price as the 3 series and the C class, both of which have nearly 20 more hp. Audi has no where near the brand power that BMW and Mercedes have to price the A4 this high. They should have priced it at around 30-31 grand so as not to directly compete with the 3 series and C class.

CJ, good point, which I think is illustrated in comparative resale values.

They should have kept the prices in line with the TSX and the IS. With only 211 hp it can't compete with sports sedans like the TL, 3 series, and G. The TSX is only 28 grand and has 201 hp and the IS is 30 grand and has 204 hp. Because Audi priced it at nearly $33,000, the 211 hp A4 has to compete with the 230 hp 3 series, the 258 hp (soon to be 280+ hp) TL, and the 306 hp G. Not a smart move to make for your top selling model. Consumers shopping the entry level lux market have tons of options in this price range, and the A4 won't really stand out enough to steal sales from any of it's competitors, especially the 3 series. For consumers the comparison would go something like: I can get into a car with far more prestige and power for the same price as a car with less prestige and power, so which one should I get. It's not even like you get better reliability, like with Acura and Lexus. People will pay for a car with less performance if it has awesome crash test ratings and solid reliability (the Acura TSX), but they won't if the car's crash test are so-so and the reliability is shady (the Saab 9-3). Audi might have a tough time selling a nearly $33,000 211 hp A4 in such a crowded market.

Having had an Acura TL, TSX, and now an Audi A4, the Audi is so much better designed and built its not even close. Sure, the Acuras don't break down. But they also don't handle half as well and look like **** after two years of ownership. If all you're after is HP, then buy a pontiac or some other muscle car. If you want fit and finish and classic style and build quality, I'll take the Audi anyday. There must be a reason today's WSJ reports Audi sales very strong in face of the auto sales meltdown.

CJ,
You should really test drive an A4 with the 2.0T. It is really a fun car to drive and feels mighty quick, it does have 258 lb ft of torque.
Plus it gets significantly better mileage which may not be as big of a factor in this class. The interior is also quite nice and Audi has added a LOT more standard than before. It's not like buying a BMW with a low starting price and the purchase price is $10K more because of heated seats and other common equipment.
This is by far their most popular car with the most popular engine. Yes, the most popular engine is the 2.0T. I think one of the Detroit papers named it car of the year.
