The first thing I can say is WOW. This has got to be the best car in it's segment by far and for the price how could you beat it. Plus you get honda reliability and a decent mpg. This car will be a hot commodity. Then they plan to make a hybrid out of it! I just don't get why honda puts the ipod connector in the glovebox??? A minor flaw for a great looking car.

Knock off two of those doors and I'd buy one. I'm 6'0" with long arms and legs and generally find I have to have the seat at it's rearmost position. When the cab of a vehicle has four doors, they always make the front doors so short that the B pillar is right beside my head, creating a blind spot. Not to mention the difficulty getting in and out as you work around that pillar.

Not sure why there is so much hype over this car's efficiency. Its just OK when you consider it's engine size and hp. The 2009 Aveo gets 35mpg with the manual and the 2009 cobalt XFE gets 37mpg and 155hp. The corolla gets 35mpg and the 3400lb Malibu gets 33mpg on the highway. The Fit's city mileage is a little more impressive but not really earth shattering when you think about its small engine.

Cj

Yeah and Honda's own Civic gets 36 mpg hwy. The appeal of the Fit comes from it's versatility which cannot be matched by a sedan. Closest thing to it (versatility, size, and driving dynamics) is the Versa, but the Versa only gets 33 mpg (or as low as 31 for the man trans) hwy. The Fits mileage about matches that of it's Toyota rival the Yaris, too.

I think it looks nice. I would likely buy this over anything else its class. If they keep the price close to the 08 model - $16k is a good price for the sport model.

alex

ok, heres the deal with the this new 09 fit. Its really good, but isnt a game changet. People that have or want a fit before will still want this one, but people that shop in this class and want the lowest possible price will keep this crossed off their list, because the base price is higher than most. No question its the best in this class, and will continue to sell well. I'm a little concerned about the price overlap with the civic, they might take a few sales from the civic, but i dont see it being a major problem. Stability contol being offered is a plus, but i wish it would be standard, at least on the sport editon.

One question: why can't GM or Ford produce a similar car.

Cj

kj, Ford already does in Europe and it's even better than the Fit. The Ford Fiesta is going to begin being imported into the US next year. It will likely be the same price as the Fit (high).

I echo the comments on how nice the car looks, but also the questions about the efficiency. I would expect this to get closer to 40 mpg. If the Civic gets better mileage, then what I would really like to see is a Civic wagon like the one that was around in the early 90's.

Al

The sloped windshield on the Fit will probably give you about 0.1 extra miles per hour, but will be a pain every snow or ice storm.
These very sloped windshield are a bad idea in any part of the country that get more than a little snow and ice.

I'm not buying the "overpriced" argument. I did a little research of comparably equiped vehicles in it's class and see to get the same options as the Fit Sport ($16,060) the Versa would list at 16,600, the Focus at 16,180 (I know it's a sedan), the Kia Rio5 at 16,365, the Scion xD at 16,670 and the Aveo at 16,885. I know you can get lower priced models of these cars and you can get some incentives that honda is not currently offering. But list price to list comparison with almost the same equipment the Fit is lowest.

Cj

ziggy, it's no that the Fit is overpriced, the whole segment is. The main reason is because most of the vehicles are imported meaning manufacturers have to price in the horrible exchange rates. The compact sedan segment has more bang for your buck. Like I said the main appeal the Fit has over the standard Civic, is that it's a hatchback.

I don't see 16k for a good quality car as overpriced. We just have to face that 14-16k is now an entry level price. I agree that they're higher because they have to be imported but also because they have so many standard features now that keep them high. Things like power windows, CD players, MP3 players, ABS, traction control, keyless entry, cruise control, etc. Sometimes you can find some without some of those options with a manual transmission and pay $12,000 but you're probably going to get stuck with an aveo or rio.

Cj

That's true, ziggy. For a car loaded with all those standard comfort features 14-16K is the new starting price.

"One question: why can't GM or Ford produce a similar car."

They do in Europe. The Fit is imported to the US and obviously Honda is willing to make a small profit or no profit on this car. Ford is bringing a few European cars here by 2010 or so. Chevy has a new Aveo coming out in 2010. Aside from not being sporty the other cars in this class arent really terrible. The Fit is just the most fun to drive according to the reviews.

Part of the reason people may think the Fit is expensive is because it's down on power without providing great fuel economy and yet costs as much as true compacts with more powerful engines.

I have a honda dealer accross the street from my office. I saw that they delivered some two days ago. Went over today to take a look. The salesman told me that had 5 delivered and they've sold them already! They're gone. Said that it will be about 10 days before they get more in and they have 5 of them spoken for. Amazing!

Why doesn't it have a flat floorboard in the rear?

a. nonny. Moose

does it have DRL like the rest of Hondas lineup? Looks like it in the pic

I've been waiting a long time for this great little car. However, read that the 2009 Fit doesn't have a spare but a tire repair kit.

How does the repair kit help if the tire is flat?

That will be a huge factor for my Mom and Dad who've also been looking at the Fit. Not too excited about it myself either.

Fit is go

One tire repair kit = one can of fix-a-flat!

We already own 2 2008 Honda Fits and my son is also itching to buy one. You just can't beat it for a great all around small car that is stingy on gas. My husband got 37 MPG with a Sport automatic. Its design and fit is great.

Lynn

Regarding my earlier 8/22 post on the 2009 including a spare. Tonight we looked at a 2009 at our nearest dealer and there WAS a spare! Yea! Good for Honda!

Seeing the 2009 car in person is to fall head over heels; and we thought the 2008 was good. :)

Lynn

question for Patti G (or anyone else who owns a 2008) can you get your 2008 seats to go into the "refresh" mode? "The front seatbacks can be folded back level with the rear seat cushions to create a bed. Honda calls this the 'refresh' mode."
we couldn't figure out how to do this with the 2009, couldn't get the front seatbacks level with back seat cushions. TKS

John Button

Maybe the Aveo and the Cobalt get a tad better mileage (on the sticker, not real-world) but they're CHEVY'S. My '94 Accord has almost 200,000 on it. Try THAT on an aveo or a Cobalt. I'll take Honda.
