Holiday Treat: Gas $4.10 a Gallon

Holidaytravel

It’s one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, so it’s no surprise that gas hit almost $4.10 a gallon nationally today. Tomorrow and this weekend it could go even higher. On the whole, though, we should be encouraged that in the past few weeks it has only gone up a cent or two.

There is some good news: Diesel prices are lower today than they were a month ago, currently resting at $4.77.

But fans of E85 are hurting. Prices of the ethanol fuel have shot up 37 cents to $3.69 a gallon because of the loss of corn crops due to flooding in the Midwest. If you account for adjusted mileage compared to regular gasoline, the price of E85 is a sky-high $4.85.

Tell us what your car travel plans are for the holiday weekend, or if you’re curtailing plans because of gas prices.

I am interested in hearing the decrease in total miles driven this year compared to July 4th weekends of years past as I'm sure more families are choosing to stay home. Isn't that data typically released by AAA? The secondary benefit of more people staying home is less traffic.

GR

I WISH gas was $4.10/gallon here. I can hardly wait for $5 gallon for Labor Day weekend.

My "Zero-emissions" ride for the weekend? An innertube and some whitewater rapids!

For those of us who are having a staycation, we are being punished by those who decides to drive around for a vacation.

Bloke

J, yet again you post a bunch of nonsense. Why are you being punished by those who choose to travel? It is an economic choice for them. Should everyone else just not drive so it makes it better for you? I know, I know, don't get you started, and you are just so smart that you don't have time for me, but really your posts are so bad they just make me laugh. I feel the need to respond since no one else does.

J, if you're not doing anything this weekend? Get a job at a gas station!

DL

Boston area having crappy crappy weather again, so not going anywhere and sitting at home, drinking heavily to pass the depressing time away.

don't have enough time off to drive far enough away for some good weather either. driving is too much fun for some pathetic excuse such as gas price to keep me away otherwise.

J

Infosaur,

Who said I am not doing anything?
Having to work the whole weekend means driving to work and back home. But the price for the travel is higher than usual because all those people decided to drive the price up by driving around with their mammoth and possibly with a boat or whatever they can haul around.

Readers, for those of you feeling the emptiness in the pocket books let me help you. I have a "family car" (seats 4) that ;with no trade; you can be driving for under $400.00* p/m, including your gas expenses! The 44mpg 2008 Kia Rio! While the "Johnson's" drive there gas guzzling enormous SUV you can be traveling down the road knowing that you are saving by the mile. So please get out on the road America, drive to the destination of choice, get to the good weather, and by all means enjoy the Independence of YOUR great country! For more information please post a reply!

Troy S.

What's the resale value of that Rio? Does it offset the savings in gas?
