Cars.com Reviews 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser
Toyota's bread and butter has been its smaller cars — your typical Camrys, Corollas and Priuses (or is it Priuii?). This leads expert reviewer Kelsey Mays to wonder why the company has invested so much time and energy in the Land Cruiser. Not only is it a large SUV that's going to chug gas for its entire existence, but he finds it flawed and, worse, overpriced. According to Mays, this is one luxury SUV you can easily put in the also-ran category. Click on the link for his full review.

Kelsey, don't be too tough on the old Land Crusher. In the most remote areas of Africa, the Land Cruiser has the reputation of being the only vehicle that can survive the extreme terrain - at least that's the word from someone I know who spent time over there. While I can't argue with concerns over the price, there are lesser vehicles that cost more when similarly equipped, including the BMW X6. For most Americans, the Sequoia is the far better choice with its more sophisticated independent rear suspension, larger size and smaller pricetag. But for purists who need its off-road capabilities you can't beat the Land Cruiser and its well earned reputation for toughness. Interestingly enough, for all you GM bashers out there, every Land Cruiser sold before 1994 used a six cylinder motor licensed from, you guessed it, Chevrolet.

Red,
All good points. The Land Cruiser may be the right vehicle for a handful of buyers that need its reputation for dependability and offroad ability, though I question whether it will go where a Hummer H2 or Mercedes GL won't. In the realm of average SUV buyers, though, I suspect the vast majority will find better choices elsewhere.

The Land Cruiser is truly the only king of the road...you should see in Ethiopia, Kenya, and much of Africa how much it is used and how much people depend on it.

It's very sad to note how they've reduced the rugged and inspiring Land Cruiser to this sorry piece of spineless plastic - all in the name of new model.
