Reader Review of the Week: 2008 Infiniti G35

Reader Review Some people say life is too short to buy the same car twice, but what if you really like that car? Don't you owe it to yourself and the company that built it to give the newest model a chance? What if it doesn't live up to its previous generation? These are the risks one takes, and CJ from Chicago can attest to that with a real-life example involving Infiniti G35 models from 2004 and 2008. Read his review and write your own here.

G35

"Don't get me wrong, I love this car and this is the second one I've had. I had a 2004 and now the 2008 G35x. The improvements in the car's interior quality and toys are tremendous. The exterior changes are nice, too, even though I really loved the unique body style and headlight shape on the original G35.

"One thing I have been disappointed in is the newer engine's acceleration. The older engine had that awesome neck-snapping power from a dead stop. The new engine, even though it packs more horses overall (300-plus versus 260), does not seem to have that same juice from the get-go. Passing others on the highway once you're already in 3rd or 4th gear is still sweet, but I miss that initial burst of power.

"A nice thing about the all-wheel drive is that it seems much smoother and less of a constraint on the engine than in the previous model.

“Love this car, but miss the quick acceleration. They also, of course, jacked up the price on the newer model, which is annoying. I may have to find something with a little more zip next time."

You didn't mention if your 2004 was also AWD, though I don't think it was offered yet back then. If so, I suspect the off-the-line acceleration feeling that you miss has more to do with the AWD vs RWD than anything else.

YeaYea

I have the 2007 G35 Journey (sedan) without the AWD and there is a lack of sharp acceleration. Infiniti markets this by describing it as a "volumunous" acceleration but if you spend 40k on a sports sedan, you don't want volumunous, you want to be like a bullet fired out of the barrel upon the trigger being pulled. However, practically speaking, with premium gas on the verge of topping $5.00 per gallon, I would have just preferred the miles per gallon to be better than 20 (mostly highway for me with no traffic). If the resale value wasn't so low, I would sell this to get something with better gas mileage.
