Movers and Losers: May's Top SUVs

Fordescapehybrid

This month we’ve lumped all sizes of SUVs together, as we predict a shrinking of the SUV field in the future. The fastest-selling SUVs are the most fuel-efficient ones, with the exception of the new Honda Pilot and GMC’s Acadia. The lone traditional midsize two-row crossover is the new Nissan Murano. That seems to be a dying segment. Dodge’s new two- or three-row Journey also seems to be doing well. Losers are after the jump.

Top 10 Movers:
Non-Luxury SUVs and Crossovers

  • 2009 Honda Pilot: 6 days
  • 2009 Subaru Forester: 18 days
  • 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid: 22 days
  • 2008 Honda CR-V: 27 days
  • 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid: 29 days
  • 2008 Toyota Highlander: 30 days
  • 2008 Toyota RAV4: 30 days
  • 2009 Dodge Journey: 32 days
  • 2009 Nissan Murano: 33 days
  • 2008 GMC Acadia: 38 days

What can we say? With the exception of the Kia Sorento, most of the slowest SUVs and crossovers are the biggest and thirstiest ones, as well. Some, like the TrailBlazer are also aging designs. The Sorento is a surprising one because of the huge advertising campaign behind it, even though it’s an aging model with rather poor fuel economy compared to a CR-V or RAV4. We guess buyers aren’t swayed by media buys these days.

Top 10 Losers: Non-Luxury SUVs and Crossovers

  • 2008 Chrysler Pacifica: 178 days
  • 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor: 164 days
  • 2008 Dodge Durango: 121 days
  • 2008 Chevy TrailBlazer: 120 days
  • 2008 Kia Sorento: 109 days
  • 2008 Suzuki XL7: 106 days
  • 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara: 106 days
  • 2008 Ford Taurus X: 98 days
  • 2008 GMC Yukon: 97 days
  • 2008 Chevy Tahoe: 94 days

On the luxury side, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes own the list, with the Buick Enclave just sneaking in and the Porsche Cayenne maintaining the same exact time to sell as last month but moving up two spots to three on the list. The losers, once again, aren’t surprising, with the exception of the smaller Land Rover LR2 and the new, high-performance version of the Mercedes-Benz ML. Usually, limited, high-performance models like the ML63 sell faster due to limited supply. Otherwise, both lists are similar to last month.

I'm interested to see how the VW Tiguan does in the coming months. I think it has a lot advantages over its competition and should fare well with the crossover crowd.

The latest recall on the vehicle and suspension of sales until all vehicles on the lot have the problem rectified is going to slow the sales on this on.
