Gas-Saving Moment of the Day: Find the Hidden Gems

Gems

Every segment has vehicles with hidden fuel gems — cars that get better-than-average or exceptional mileage compared to others in their class. The key is to decide what your needs are as a car buyer, then seek out the best bet for you in terms of lifetime fuel cost and initial price.

For instance, if you're in the market for a midlife-crisis sports car — a segment that averages 16 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway — it would be worth taking a look at the Audi TT or the Volkswagen GTI. Both average 22/29 mpg city/highway.

Take a look at Cars.com's Best Gas Mileage by Vehicle Class chart for more hidden gems.
