Gas-Saving Moment of the Day: Write Your Congressman

Capitolbuilding

Yes, this is a car blog and not a lesson from your eighth-grade Social Studies teacher, but maybe we all need a reminder of our civic responsibilities from time to time. We all have a congressman or woman who is — at least nominally — responsible to us and our concerns. Writing that person a letter is not spitting in the wind, as most offices do tally and respond to the letters they receive.

Keep it civil, intelligent and relatively brief. Express your concerns about high gas prices and explain the positions you support and why you support them. What solutions do you see for the future? How would you like your representative to vote? How do you feel about the votes he or she has cast so far? There may even be state or local matters that will have a direct economic impact on you. In West Virginia, for example, the state legislature has begun a special session to debate a scheduled gas-tax increase.

The U.S. has some of the lowest citizen participation of any democracy in the world, yet likes to brag about it the most. Perhaps it's time to offer your opinion to someone who counts. If you don't know who your congressman is, check out this helpful government website.

All these gas saving moments remind me of a Dilbert comic a while back where Dogbert suggests ramming large SUVs into hybrid cars, that way they use no gas at all, and that saving that saving the earth is basically making other people sacrifice. A tad bit on the harsh side, but nonetheless, hilarious.

What do you know about Ethos? i got some off the net and it seems to work well. 20% milage improvement on 90 Accord, 15% on 05 V6 Accord, but a little pricey. Do I beleive what i'm seeing? Thanks

I've toyed with the idea of mailing my congressman a drill bit. I'm sure I have a 3/16ths or something like that in my tool box that I'll never use.

"Drill here, Drill now."

I'll probably end up on a watch list.
