Chrysler Gas Deal Not Wildly Effective

Chryslercards

The big focus of Chrysler’s $2.99 gas deal for three years is current events; it doesn’t address the company’s current lineup of vehicles, which have mostly seen declining sales. We’ll post a series of stories today about cash back offers that have been added to the gas deal for all three Chrysler brands, but to preface that, here is a list of vehicles that sold fewer units in May (with the $2.99 gas deal) than in April (before the gas deal). May is traditionally a better sales month overall, as well. An * means the model saw an improvement in May 2008 sales over May 2007.

As you can see below, 10 of the automaker’s most popular models declined while another 10 improved month to month. We excluded outgoing models and niche vehicles like the Dodge Viper and Sprinter.

It it any wonder that this promotion wasn't successful...Chrysler doesn't produce anything that gets more than 30mpg. The Journey has modest sales because it's new and the Patriot, Compass and Caliber did well because they get the highest MPG in their entire fleet. Where's the Hornet? If they don't start producing something with a high mpg then they'll die a slow and painful death. RIP Chrysler.

To me that seems like an actual huge improvement in sales, not a decline.

Andy,
Thanks. We've fixed the placement. The numbers were correct. So even steven 10 to 10.

I wouldn't say it's a "huge" improvement when you consider they were down 11% from last year. Not good for a new model. But it is certainly a bigger month to month improvement.

I've been monitoring this locally (LA) for a few months. Looks like the plants and the dealers have throttled back and are left with the overloaded guzzlers. All the models that we would want and can aford are already gone.

Hello, I agree, the issue is the gas guzzlers, basically eveything that inproved, save the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, are the ones with better MPG. I bought a new 07 5 speed Patriot last month and it is a great vehicle, AWD and gret MPG and really roomy, I look for sales to increase on it month to month. I too think the Hornet would be a GREAT addition to the line and would find it's was as the closest thing out there to a Mini Cooper, probably for a bit less and a really fun ride. The big 3 has ignored the signs and have kept pushing guzzlers until it is just too late :(
