Today on MotherProof: 2008 Chevy Malibu Hybrid Reviewed

Just a few short years ago, Emily Hansen thought of hybrid vehicles as something out of science fiction. She figured all hybrid vehicles would have "Jetsons"-style bubbles, or perhaps R2-D2-like robots as passengers. Today, however, hybrids have entered the mainstream, and a perfect example of the takeover is the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid. Also, Lori Hindman spotlights the Mercedes GLK from the new 'Sex in the City' movie.

This week's Barrons has an article that states GM is worth 1/16th the value of Toyota. That's amazing. Looks like GM is finally reaping what it has sowed all these years. Although the Malibu looks like a decent car, at the end of the day it's still a GM product.

Looks like GM is trying to do with the Malibu the same thing Honda did with it's hot selling Midsize sedan. (Accord Hybrid). Ummm.... Did they see what happened with the Accord Hybrid?
Detroit seems to have thier blinders on here lately.
Here's a suggestion or two:
1. More small cars/fuel efficient vehicles
2. Stop making the good stuff for other countries markets and leaving us with the watered down "domestic" vehicles.
3. Quality is more important than quantity
4. Trucks/SUVs in thier current form are going the way of the Dodo bird.

The Accord Hybrid utilized its hybrid system for high performance- like the Lexus Systems. The GM Mild Hybrid system is quite different.

Broq,
Excellent point! I didn't see that.
Do you think it will flop like the Accord did? What caused the Accord to flop and does the Malibu share the same fate traits?

Troy,
I think the malibu hybrid would have flopped if it were introduced at the same time as the Accord hybrid- it just isn't that special to me. With gas the way it is now, I think any car that gets good mileage will prosper. The Accord was introduced at the wrong time, I think it would sell today.
