Ford Adds Hatchback Fiesta to U.S. Launch

Ford Fiesta

Today, Ford announced it will build the upcoming Ford Fiesta at its Mexican assembly plant. The bigger news is that along with a small sedan, Ford will also build a two-door hatchback version of the Fiesta for North America in 2010. When the Fiesta launches, buyers will be able to choose between the hatch or the sedan.

What’s being phased out of the assembly plant to make room for the new Fiesta? The F-Series pickup. The F-Series will still be produced at a number of U.S. plants, but this is an illustration of how the company is shifting production to match new demand for small, fuel-efficient cars versus trucks and SUVs. But will 2010 be too late for another small Ford car to hit the market?

Check out our previous coverage of the Fiesta for more photos and information.

Guess we'll have to live with the 1.6l. Would be more economical with a 1.4 or the 1.4 diesel.

Brilliant news! the sedan is most likely gonna be a bit frumpy and dumpy, but the hatch is lovely. Now if they'd just introduce the 5 door then I may possibly be in the market myself.

As it is, I'd never buy the sedan and the 3 door is off the agenda (despite being lovely) because i do actually have adult friends who would need a ride sometimes.

Come on Ford, you know it makes sense...

Did someone at Ford suddenly wake up?

This machine IS late for the smaller car party, so to speak. The Ford suits should make the effort of introducing this model here BEFORE 2010. We need machines like this yesterday...follow?

Peace!<-AladdinSane-

Mart, I have good news for you then! According to an article published by AutoWeek, a Ford spokesperson has announced that the five-door hatchback Fiesta will be introduced to the States in addition to the 4-door sedan and 3-door hathcback bodystyles.

If you look at either the Ford or GM United Kingdom sites, you see that they both have many attractive smaller cars.

It's a shame that neither had any interest in bringing some of these models, over here to their US production lines. They could sure use such cars now.

What's gonna be sad is the Fiesta will probably have a higher quality, better interior than a Lincoln MKZ which will likely cost 2x as much. I guess that's not sad for the consumer, but it shows you how watered down Ford's US products have become vs their European counterparts. But Ford might do something stupid and put a "special" US-spec interior in the US model that will be one step above junk. That would likely save Ford some money but it would further tarnish their image and not help consumers at all. I guess it wouldn't be sooo bad if the price was between 10 and $12,000.

.
2010 Fiesta Coupe is a nice looking car (if the pic above reflects reality). The 5 door hatch would be a better seller though - both are needed.

Too bad it won't be made in the USA though. (NAFTA & PNTR have really short-changed Americans/ America)

Euro Ford has a GREAT line up of cars & powertrains - how about for US?

2010 Fiesta? Needed now. But better late than never . . . . I guess . . . .

Vaya con Dios.

re: Fit - good price, package, mpg & resale - but it got badly beaten with the Honda Ugly Stick . . . .

Do you want a car that gets 100 mpg? Low car weight (or mass) is the most important requirement for improvement in fuel economy. An electric car, a hybrid car, or a hydrogen car will be more fuel efficient if they are lighter. Light weight is dangerous in collisions unless crumple zones for the rear and side of a vehicle are provided.
I have invented a way to make small cars much safer in collisions.
Please see my website www.safersmallcars.com
If you like the idea, please tell the car companies. At this time they have rejected my idea.

Shopa, I'll ask you again. Could you please keep your stupid BS to yourself? Stop polluting cars.com with ads for your website.

Cj

Okay so I decided to actually go to shopa's website. His idea is more stupid than I had first assumed, shopa please go home and stop trying.

Again... Ford is late to the party. All the importers already have thier feet on the dance floor while Ford is outside trying to get in the party. And, why do they continue to do the opposite of almost every other car maker? Make the good versions of thier vehicles for other markets and keep the watered down versions for the home front. Do they not hold meetings to discuss what the public actually wants? Are they smarter than the customer?

Sorry for the rant. I just wish these guys would wake up. The Fiesta is a good start however.... if they don't "domestic" it down too much.

look at the cars from ALL makers across the pond, they are all better than what we get. Its not just Ford.

"look at the cars from ALL makers across the pond, they are all better than what we get. Its not just Ford."

I don't think it is the European reality, I lived there for a while and I can tell you than 100K kilometers, roughly 60k miles, most European cars are dead.

Ford is too late yet again. Toyota got my money last week for a Yaris 2 door. It's averaging 42MPG, even Chevy's Korean built Aveo could not touch those numbers. Ho-hum to Ford who only really knows how to build over priced gas guzzeling dinosaurs.
