I'd say don't sweat it. I lived in Maine as a kid and we had a front drive hatchback. Maybe you'll be living in a really isolated area where they don't plow the roads but anywhere the roads are plowed 4WD is not required. Careful driving is your best bet. I remember the first vehicles to go off the road were always the SUVs. I'm sure they're tough to handle when they break traction. Remember, 4WD helps you go. It doesn't help you turn or stop at all. :)

Most small / midsize suv's have traction control standard on their 2WD models. Don't spend the extra dollars for 4WD. You don't need it unless you live in a remote/rural area where the snow plows don't go.
