BMW M1 Hommage: Ugliest Concept Car Ever

M1hommage

We’re not sure there’s never been an uglier concept car, but the BMW M1 Hommage certainly comes close — if it doesn’t outright snag the crown. Looking like a reject from an ill-advised “Back to the Future” sequel, the M1 Hommage is an homage — those crazy Europeans spell it differently — to the BMW M1, a supercar the company built in the 1970s.

The concept must be an homage, because it certainly looks dated. It was unveiled to the public at a ritzy auto event in Italy this past weekend. We’re sure much champagne was downed to make it look good. If your Monday-morning eyes are willing, a photo gallery is below. Feel free to tell us if you disagree with our assessment.

I don't think it's that bad. I wouldn't mind being seen driving it.

It's not like an Aztek or anything.

Phaeton

Call me crazy but I actually like it. The rims need to go however as they look like something from an old hotwheels car. I am also not a fan of the trans-am slats over the rear window and the Hummer style vent in the center of the hood. If they managed to incorporate the kidney grilles a little better instead of them floating there like a car with its front end in the shop it could work. That being said I LOVE the lights, positively badass. The overall lines on the car don't look too shabby either when you consider the vehicle this is being evolutionally modeled off of. The dual BMW logos on the back are a nice touch too. Either way this is a design study & I doubt it has an interior or engine. To each his own I guess.

Kate

I think it's kind of cool, it looks like the Batmobile. Agree with the above poster, the Aztek was WAY WAY uglier.

Mart

Yeah, I dunno if it's as bad as you are making out. It's a pretty good update of the classic design, and the slatted window is of course part of that retrospective.

I'm not a fan of newer BMW design buy i think i prefer this to the CS concept that was revealed fairly recently.

BTW, us Europeans spell Homage the same as you ( i think!) - being as it's a french word anyway. I suspect this mis-spelling is something to do with the M division and an allusion to the original M-1 car.

Mart

Ok, i looked up Hommage. Apparently it's the french spelling (and dutch), but certainly the rest of us spell it with one M!

andy

This is really a nice car. Its like a modern 8 series.

european dude

Well, you are entitled to your own opinion for sure :)
And given, the midly said, boring korean looking wannabee in your web-logo i grant you the right to think of this concept as ugly ;=)
( Oups!, now im banned here ;) )

Well, I think this "Hommage" is a great retro design, and made me think of the old classic M1 t once. The wheel are just a nice retro redo of the original wheels, right : http://www.ssip.net/upload/bmw-m1-side-1_115.jpg

Have fun :))))

I love it! It's eye catching and beautiful. It makes the statement of BMW while including all of the necessary angles to make the car seem fast even while standing still. The rims have a classic character that gives the modern reference to the M1 heritage. The lights are extraudinarily sexy having been emboldened by their small visibilty beneath the hood.

I will say that I think this car is going to be loved or hated by each individual based on the person. There will be no in between. Those that were quoted as thinking the car was "ok" or "not that bad" merely are afraid to stand up to the obviously wrong view point of David Thomas. If it wasn't for his past articles, this one would cause me to doubt his ability to spot true potential.

I think this car is going to be a fantastic attraction when it becomes more public. Old and middle aged men are going to have their lusting eyes pried away from this car by their wives and 20 year old girlfriends at shows. Young boys will be caught by security humping the rear end and models will be begging their sugar daddies for one behind closed doors.

I am truly in love. Now I have to figure out a way to actually get my hands on one.

As a child who grew up and fell in love with cars during the 80s, this car is awesome! Its styling reminds me of the Lamborghini Countach, the Ferrari 328, and even the De Tomaso Pantera. It also reminds me of the Dodge Charger concept car from 2002 or 2003, but that could be because of the color.

I would never own a BMW - unless it was this one.

My wife thinks it's ugly, though. She thinks a lot of exotic cars are ugly.

Tom L

The wheels are the only bad thing about this car. It could've done better with a set of wheels from HRE or Lexani even. 360 Forged should've just sent them a set.

Otherwise, I like it. Why? Bangle obviously had nothing to do with it.

I thinks its actually cool. Yes it looks like a concept from the mid 70's but it's not that bad. I mean have you seen some of Acuras or (fill in the blank car company) concepts lately? Some of them are ugly as hell. I think this is a good one because it looks like it could actually go into production once the concept fat has been trimmed off. Oh yeah, and fix those rims to proper ones. It's better than some of the Bangle flame surfacing for sure.

mmm I love that grille. It's like homage to the earlier BMWs :)

redcell

I find the BMW in question to be indicative of many current styling trends-like them or not.Cars and architecture in general are taking on more flamboiantcy. It's a sign of the times that we live in.

Mike B.

Well, I think the rear of the vehicle's not all that terrible, but overall I agree with the Kicking Tires guys: this thing's pretty dang ugly.

Wow. I can't believe how many people like this thing. Thanks to Mike B. for agreeing with us or else I was going to lose faith

Sri

This car looks way cool...it has all the design cues for future and having the retro styling about it. I agree with Tom L about the wheels which is the only ugly thing.

Russ

Except for the rims, the car is really cool

hummd

I am not too sure whether its the ugliest or the hottest concept car ever?! I found this video where the responsible designer gives some first hand information on the BMW M1 Hommage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xJ3SGX4WwQ

The lads in Munich must be absolutely fuming at the moment. In absolute shock, it appears that BMW has completed development of a new supercar in the mould of their legendary M1 completely undetected. Yet, when they least expected it, someone has gotten behind enemy lines and snapped an undisguised... more at http://www.eurocarblog.net

It reminds me of Tron. Yeah, I said it.

Vlasta

Well, those crazy Europeans found USA, just to remind you. I am a student of design in Italy and I tell you this car looks stunning, it is absolutely epic. We spell it different in Europe because we also invented the language. It is called English because it is ENGLISH not American. I like America though, but you can call Europeans crazy. It is a cradle of civilization for god sake! And we make bloody good cars: BMW, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Bugatti, Jaguar, Porsche, Zonda, Audi... You have got to respect that.

lee

Go away. Have you been doing this very long? Honestly, the cars lines are very clean and its a stunning looker. Grant it, I too would dump the wheels but after that you have got to be kidding with that critique and I hope you were doing it to get a response. To each his own. By the way what do you consider a concept car that in your mind is stunning?

Mark

That's right mate! I agree with u Vlasta. It's a mind-boggling car. European cars rock, with all respect to the Ford GT :D

John

Guys
I know taste is a very individual thing but sorry............ lessons of style to european car manufacturer like BMW you are just completely out of the game.... may be next time you will criticize the European manufacturers technology too ????!
sorry I am laughing too loud.... wake up guys ! and go an see them explaining Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, Audi that US design is leading the way.... now say it early cause I'll need to buy a ticket to go and see that !

Ken

Anyone who thinks this car is ugly is smoking way to much crack. This is the hottest BMW I have ever seen, well maybe the CS is, well for a concept car anyways.

I dont think the BMW M1 Hommage is ugly

rubyred3000

I think it looks sweet. I'd pay 6 figures for it. Then another couple thousand for different rims. Looks like they made them out of a shop vent fan.

blaze

the best pick-up line this year!!! it compensates for every guys inadequacies as a gentleman, including manners!!!i dare you to call it ugly in public!!!

abiona alli

contrary to your opinion i really like the design of this car. its my favourite bmw pure sports car design and i wonder what you find ugly about it. its likely i will find any car that you call beautiful ugly

Buckaroo Banzai

That car is both gorgeous and bad-ass.
You are neither.
LOL

jacob

Yeah, the wheels definetly don't do it justice. And i only find it ugly in the first picture. But id love to see this come out as BMW's supercar. Totally badass. Imagine seeing those headlights in your side mirrors passing you. Its like a nightmare. But in a good way.

car rocker

Dudes your all crazy this car is the beast!!!!!!!!!!!
