Nissan, Toyota Latest to Add Push-Button Starters

Pushbutton

James Bond has contributed a lot to our cultural lexicon, but our favorite Bond gadgets were always car-related. A pen that shoots a laser is OK, we guess, but a Porsche Cayenne Turbo with actual flame-powered turbo boosters? That’s the essence of cool.

As cars go high-tech, car owners will get to feel increasingly like super spies. One immediate improvement: push-button starters with keycard activation. Turnkey starters are fine, but the feeling that comes from hearing a car rev up at the push of a button is something turnkeys just can’t replicate. Now that Nissan and Toyota are putting push-button starters in their most mass-market vehicles, it seems it’s only a matter of time before these high-end starters come standard in almost every vehicle on the market. Even at the risk of more faulty-electronics-related trips to the dealer, that sounds good to us.

The stupid ones are those that you have to put the Key FOB into a hole first for. The best are the touchless/wireless transmitters.

Hmmm...I'd rather keep the old-fashoned key then risk having electrical problems with the start button. It's not so cool having to be towed to the dealership because the button won't work.

Since this is wireless technology what do they have in place to stop people from stealing the signal and creating a copy to steal your car?

The fact that it doesnt work from more than 2 feet away is a pretty good way to prevent stolen key codes.

woogie-
I actually looked into this a while back. Short answer: Alot.
It's not a particularly complicated encryption-type scheme, but it's rather effective. That's even true just on the key-fob unlock signals. There are groups out there that have systems that if you were truly dedicated you could steal a signal, but it is not small task. The reason is that it's not just a signal you have to copy, but a 40 bit (if I recall correctly) digital rolling code. If I was your neighbor, and had enough computer time, I could probably crack it, but not in the mall parking lot.

I am happy with my key turning on the ignition.
For being an airhead sometimes, I might forget my card key at my backpack and the car will be gone before I know it.

This new push button technology has some errors.
Here's what has already happened to me.
My wife and I went to town. I needed to drop her off at the nail salon and I was going to do some other running around. I pull up and let her out at the nail place and I take off across town and park the car. I come back to the car and GUESS WHAT.....it doesn't start. The remote is in my wifes purse. I have to call a taxi and spend 20 bucks to get back to the salon and get the remote. The damn car should die when the remote leaves so you'll know you need it. OR you should be able to deactivate one of your remotes to leave in the glove box so you can still lock the car as long as one remote is outside of the car. So much for modern technology. Somebody please give me a key!!!!!!

Don't forget to turn off the ignition by pressing the stop/start button. Just pulling out the key will not turn off the car or give you a warning the engine is still running. The Nissan Murano ran for 3 hours today, what the f... is wrong with Nissan?
