Arriving as much of the U.S. awakens from a long, cold winter, the BMW M3 convertible is an ideal New York auto show debut to usher in the coming warmer months. Available this spring, the M3 convertible will start at $65,725 including the $775 destination charge and features a power-retractable hardtop and a 414-hp V-8 that can propel it from zero to 60 mph in as little as 5.1 seconds. Check out the gallery below of images from the show floor.
Did you guys say 5.1 seconds?
How long did the Evo X and STI take to get there?
$66,000 for a car the size of a honda civic is outrageous. In another year you'll be able to buy a home for that price - in fact, you can buy one now for that in many parts of the U.S. If you want to spend that much on a car, buy a Nissan GT-R - at least it's fast (0-60 in 3.3 seconds) and Nissan is not a boutique manufacturer. My neighbor's BMW sat in the dealer's shop for six weeks while they waited for parts to repair the moonroof.
There is always an argument for a faster car for less money. But this is a niche product that offers a combination of performance, luxury, exclusivity and practicality.
In terms of value for money, its a personal weighting of whether the niche combination meets the needs for the cost.
I contend that this product is exactly in-line with the BMW market and will be successful. I believe that the sales numbers will prove it.
There's no denying that the retractable hardtop convertible M3 is a gorgeous car and will appeal to its target audience. I agree with your prediction, Al. I was just questioning the marketing and pricing of the M3 at a time when a lot of Americans are really struggling just to hold on to the basics. On the other hand, Cadillac introduced its V16 in the depths of the Great Depression and was able to sell a small number of them.
Al,
Keep in mind that this is a BMW not a Ferrari.
This is such a beauty. I'll find ways to afford it. Other options are available at http://buybmwm3convertible.com
