2008 New York Auto Show: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hyundaigenesiscoupe

  • Competes with: Mitsubishi Eclipse, Ford Mustang
  • Looks like: The Genesis coupe concept with the headlights from an Infiniti G37
  • Drivetrain: V-6 or turbocharged four-cylinder with five- or six-speed automatic or six-speed manual; rear-wheel drive
  • Hits dealerships: Spring 2009

Hot on the heels of the Hot Wheels-inspired Genesis coupe concept that was introduced at last year’s Los Angeles auto show, Hyundai will drop the real thing this week in New York. From the side, the Genesis coupe shares some lines with Hyundai’s current — and likely outgoing — Tiburon, but it’s an entirely different car.

Like the Genesis sedan, the coupe is rear-wheel drive. Rather than using the V-8 from the Genesis sedan, the coupe will have an available 300-plus hp V-6. A turbocharged 200-plus-hp four-cylinder is the base engine.

As far as competitors go, Hyundai names various FWD coupes as targets — like the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Honda Civic Si — all the way up to the Infiniti G37. No doubt some shoppers will also consider muscle cars like the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. Hyundai has also said the Genesis coupe will cost less than other 300-hp cars. The cheapest of those is the Ford Mustang GT, which starts at $26,080.

We’ll learn more about the Genesis coupe on Wednesday when it makes its official debut at the New York auto show. For now, check out the photo gallery below and let us know if you think Hyundai can compete on the sports car front.

Sharp looking car. Hyundai has caught the competition as far as design goes.

its nice but the mustang is more muscle and this is not as tough and bad ***

this will have slightly more hp than a Mustang GT.

The front end is phony looking. If Hyundai wants to step into the scene, they've got to make a splash. This isn't it. Headlights and front end look very girly.

definetly reminds of a infinit G, hyundai needs to come up with its own ideas

Looks good. As far as them copying design, almost all car-makers copy design.

really looks like an Infiniti G35 and Acura RSX had a baby. Still though, not a bad looking car.

Not a bad looking car, kind of Tiburony. But the droopy rear side windows don't do it for me. Maybe it looks better in person.

Wow, looks really nice and if the price is really where the current Tiburon V6 is at, it's gonna be a great value! And love the design, but kinda looks like the BMW Z4 coupe as well as G37 too. And I was hoping the interior would look kinda better, but still, looks like it will be a hit. :)

"Kind of girly"?

What if this is marketed at women? You know, a woman driving a powerful sports car...

it will be nice without Hyundai's logo

Wow. This is a very nice car.

loved the concept and now it's here i still think it's a great looking car, apart from i'm worried about the front, I think it looks a bit lightweight compared to the rest of the car, side on view shows what I mean best. Some other sites with all the launch photos really do give you a better idea of the look of this motor. I personally cannot wait to see it in the metal, but am gutted to read that it looks like it will not be sold here in the UK! :(

Even after looking at this car for some time now, I'm not getting tired of it. I even have a full size poster framed on my bedroom wall. It looks clean, sleek, & fast, even when sitting still. The dropped quarter glass, Z-style lines, & expanding rear end especially look cool. I hope the performance lives up to all the hype & meets the high benchmark expectations Hyundai has set. Make mine a red GT 6cyl w/ZF six speed auto (paddle shifts if available) & the SE sports pkg.

Good for Hyundai. Our automotive scene needs something fresh. The Mustang, a bad a** car in it's own right, IMO has been played out. The problem is that it doesn't have much to compete with in it's price point.... Hyundai has done it's homework.

I predict this will appeal more towards younger tuners. Us older folks will still unfortunately lean towards tried and true domestics because we're afraid to step out of our comfort zones.
