GE Investing in Electric Car Technology
One of several green entries at the Geneva Motor Show this week was the Th!nk Ox, a product of Norwegian electric car company Th!nk, which probably doesn’t realize how annoying that exclamation point in its name is. Despite its company’s questionable nomenclature, the Ox does look like a pretty cool electric concept. On the heels of the Ox’s moment in the spotlight, GE has followed up with a $4 million investment in Th!nk Global. GE continued with a $20 million investment in A123Systems (seriously, what is it with these names?), which owns the patent for the Nanophosphate lithium-ion battery. That money makes GE the single largest investor in A123Systems.
In layman’s terms, that means GE seems really intent on getting into the electric car game. These new investments bring the company’s total spending on electric car and battery research up to around $100 million. Will we one day see the GE Ox? Maybe not, but at the very least the battery will have the electric giant’s stamp.

Isn't it just common sense that power companies like GE should be investing in EV technology?

GE is a great company - a leader in wind turbine manufacturing, and now moving into electric car technology. Corporate America rarely shows such leadership.
