Recall Alert: 2006-08 Chevrolet HHR
GM is recalling more than 180,000 Chevy HHRs due to poor crash-test ratings — an unusual cause. The company is going to insert energy-absorbent materials into the headliner of all models not equipped with roof-mounted airbags.
Model year 2006-08 HHRs are included in the recall. It’s extremely rare for a car company to fail a standard federal safety test, and we’re surprised it took so long for the recall to take place, since it involves a 3-year-old model. For more information, contact Chevrolet at 800-630-2438.

So.....why did it take 3 years to recall the vehicles? As a consumer I wonder what else they are "holding out" on.

I bought a 2007 HHR about 6 months ago and I have to say that this was the biggest mistake that i ever made in my life. I have to take this car back to the dealer every other week with a new problem. First it started out with a loud popping in the front end to which the chevy service guy told me that this was normal. My front rotors were bad after 2 months, the radio quit working , the drivers seat track broke, my drivers side window molding fell out, windshield leaks now I hear that theres a recall on them. I dont suggest anyone to go out and buy this hunk of junk. GM quality isnt worth a DAMN!! I wish i had my old Honda back that i used as a trade in.

Let's just say this HHR saved the lives of my whole family. I love the vehicle, definitely want another one after I finish paying this one off. Mine is now totaled. We rolled at least 4 times sideways and I have only mild head trauma and my spouse and two children are in great shape. Still in shock but walking and talking without any broken bones. It is truly amazing to be alive. The only feature that I missed was front centered interrior lighting.

I bought a 2007 HHR about 6 months ago, it had a loud noise in the front end it was a lose axle. Radio didn't work neither did the driver side window. I think it sucks big time!!!! hate it. Wish I still had my Durango.

I bought an HHR October of last year and have not had any major problems. I did have it serviced b/c the plastic elbow piece to add oil came out. I love my HHR!!!

I purchased an HHR about 10 months ago and have put about 20k miles on it and have had no problems whatsoever. It's a little small for me but but that is the only problem I have with it and my wife has no complaints.

I bought a 2007 HHR a year ago. I have not had any problems with it. It gets great gas mileage. I also find it to be very comfortable.

I bought a 2006 HHR in March of 2006 and i have never had a problem with it, my family and friends love to go crusin with me in my HHR because it can fit all of us comfortably and the ride is so smooth.

I bought a 2006 HHR used and I love it except for one problem. I noticed an odor after warming it up and after I drive for awhile and get back in it. It smells like something died in it!! It's disgusting. I'm starting to think someone is playing a practical joke on me. Any thoughts?

I bought a 2006 HHR in February of 06 and I love it!!! Moved our son into college with it and it had plenty of room. I only have to take it in for regular maintenance, and one leak in the sunroof seal, which the dealer fixed that day. LOVE MY HHR!!!

I love my 2007 HHR - I've put over 19K miles on it. I did have an accident last year and it took 3 weeks to get replacement parts, but once repaired I can't even tell it was in an accident.

A co-worker just bought a new Malibu. He said that he loves it. I told him to check back with me when he's got about 50K miles on it to let me know if he still loves it. All of these stories about how they have an HHR with 20k miles and no problems. Surpise! That's the way it should be. Now if you say the same thing when it has 100K miles that will be the mark of quality.

I bought an o6 lt2 loaded for 22900 in April of 06. Have 43000 miles. Untill the warranty went out was in the shop atleast 1 time a month. Rotors,brakes, popping in front, replaced the steering componets. I do get 28-29 miles a gal. and it does have a different muffler, but why wnt gm fix my leaky window now? I didnt do it. 2nd leak. 1st was in rear this time it is in the front, windsheild. Back to how much I paid. I owe over 16000 and went to trade it in a few weeks ago and the guy told me I was upside down on it bye almost 8000. I said what. They loose value so bad you have to keep it till its almost paid off to get anything more than what you owe on it. The guy was like it has over 40000 miles and I can get PT cruiser for around 8-9000 all day long, told him to go getem. So Im stuck with a car that is nice looking runs and not bad on gas but soaks passanger floor board everytime it rains, needs brakes every time you change the oil, pops when you roll over a speed bump, and not worth half of what I owe on it. If it gets totaled I will have to pay the bank several thousands of dollars to pay it off cause we dropped the gap coverage cause it was quite high for this model now I now why. Guess I have to pick it back up.

I had a dead smell in my old Aztek. We changed the serpentine belt and the smell dissappeared.

My 07 HHR 2LT 2.4 auto, now has 7200 miles,, only problem is the FM wont play sometimes upon start-up, after turning car off and on, sometimes several times, it will start working again.. weird, AM works, XM sample stations work, only FM flakes out sometimes. Other than that, I changed oil @ 6K miles, when the dash oil life indicator showed 40%. Took car to Reno, got 28 mpg up there 29 mpg on the way back. No strange noises, no leaks, I bought in Nov 07, had 150 miles on it then. Love the car.

I LOVE my HHR 2006 - but I worry about the number of times it's been in the shop. Everything up to this point has been covered under the warranty - BUT - what happens when the warranty runs out?! I worry everyday! But I love the car - I'm so torn!!

I bought a '07 used in February w/29K miles. I use it for work & it now has a bit over 60K. Haven't had any problems. I change the oil every 2 weeks. Have changed air cleaner once & 2 weeks ago had the injectors cleaned. I drive 5 days a week from Phoenix to Tucson and back & 1 day a week from Phoenix to Nogales, AZ and back. Everything works and when I wear this one out will probably buy another one unless something comes along that gets better gas mileage even though this one gets great mileage. I would like to see a E85 version of the HHR.

I bought my used 06 hhr (23,000 miles)about eight months ago and really like it, I haven't had any probles at this point.The ride is nice and the gas mileage is great.This vehicle is very practial and I like the fact that you can put the back seats down flat and haul just about anything.I am concidering getting another one for the wife next year if things keep going so well. Also consumer reports gave this vehicle "fair" marks, which was one of the reasons I bought it. I drove a PT Cruiser and did not like it compared to the hhr.

The HHR is great...as a rental car. I see GM has been picking-up the slack now that Chrysler is pulling back their fleet sales. In all seriousness my Deere tractor feels more solid than the HHR. As a rental it's fine, as far as actually buying one you must be crazy. I'm not surprised GM took 3 years to address the issue.

Gas milage is terrible 19 mpg,hope it gets better.Good looking and fun to drive .GM could do a lot with this A body .Possibly a pick up?I know the 08's have a recall on the oil pan drain . Disappointed couldn't find it on the web.It's good to have inside info.

I DROVE 18,000 MILES in alamo HHR RENTAL no problems what so ever from orlando to key west to niagra falls then back to orlando GREAT CAR GREAT ECONOMY 30 plus best 24 MPG worst at 80mph MAX hour after hour at 60 to 70mph average 28 to 30 mpg STOPS CORNERS TURNS OK its NO BMW or MERC but it does everthing WELL enough if you drive safely YOU WONT HAVE ANY DRAMA No rattles or Pieces falling off I WOULD BUY ONE NO WORRIES 8.5 TO 9 OUT OF 10 ps RADIO WAS FANTASTIC SEATS OK TO GOOD (NEEDS CRUISE CONTROL STANDARD) my only complaint

If you have a HHR I may be able to shed some light on the water leak in the passenger side floor board when it rains. Its a little rubber gasket that is causing all the problems. I fixed it myself for about 20 bucks. If you are interested please email me and I will give you full details on how I did it and you can go from there. If you like I have pictures also. Millage is great. 29 in town. up to 34 on highway. standard. and i have cruise control. no problems with the car but everyone around me wants to hit it. over 40,000 miles. kid in college parents in different state. comfortable ride. husband wants one. make sure tire pressure is what tires say and gas millage goes up.

I bought my 2006 HHR brand new late in 2005 in Atlanta, Ga and I think it is a wonderful car to drive. Lucky I haven't had any major problems with the HHR like I've been hearing about on this blog. It drives well. Yes I will admit, the the car does shakes a bit when you apply the brakes. But I haven't had any problems with leakage at all. The "engine light" did flash it's pretty face about a yr. back, but it went out and hasn't come back since.
My car has done some milage...it's at 94,000 and it is still holding up pretty well.
So all in all the HHR has done pretty well for me thus far.

first new car that i have ever bought. Love the ride and size former car was a suberban that got wrecked and i dont feal crampt like i do in my brothers 2007 cobalt. Bought june 24 2008 got the ss model with the auto trans and the turbo engine gets 30hy and 19city.

I purchased my HHR in 2006. I absolutely love this vehicle! I have over 20,000 miles on it and "knock-on-wood" I haven't had any problems with it. It has alot of power for a 4 cyl. I think that everyone should be looking at it when I drive by them. The only problem I have is that there are alot of them the same color as mine...Starburst Orange. I'll have to put a strip on it to make it different.
For those who have alot of problems with theirs, I am sorry because you won't enjoy it. There are always a few vehicles that are a Lemon and unfortunetly for those that purchased them it isn't pleasurable. A friend of mine bought a Mercedes SUV and has had horrible problems with it including the front end collapsing for no reason!!
But this HHR owner loves it.

2007 Chevy hhr shuts off no apparent reason. Is someone going to have to die before gm or white chevy in Roanoke rapids do anything. Or do we have to wait till better business bureau take car of it.

I have email the view, consumer protection. Roanoke rapids mayor and he refuse to do anything he is useless, cnn, abc news wral,fox news, msnbc roanoke rapids daily herald, gm and so on. I was told that this was not the first time that white chevy in roanoke rapids has had problem with lemon cars and refuse to do anything. I was told by jeff the service mgr that I am not allowed to go back there cause I have no right to be mad.

I am a 2007 Chevy HHR owner and I have had numerous problems with my car and I see that other people have had the same problems with the same car. You need to recall this car. I have sent letters to the consumer protection agency, the us attorney general, the NHSTA, Better business bureau, CNN, New York Times, Raleigh Attorney general, 20/20 and so on. I will not sending letters and telling how horrible this car is until its recall.
My car has stalled on the highway over 32 times while driving without warning, I was in front of a truck, in the left lane of a busy highway in New York, on different turnpikes and it seems that you don’t care. My gearshift has been replace I couldn’t get my key out, the remote sucks, the brakes had problems, the window has gotten stuck numerous times, and there was a leak. Enough is enough does someone has to die in order for this car to be recalled?

I was on the highway last night and my car cut off while on a bridge and I tried to move over to the shoulder and I couldn’t turn my steering wheel to get onto the shoulder. I finally got it started and got to the shoulder. It is not like you don’t know these problems exist cause it is on nhsta website. Well if you are blonde and not aware of these problems let me be the first to tell you. I just did a search on the Internet complaints of the 2007 Chevy hhr and all of these complaints came up. I was told by white Chevrolet in Roanoke rapids in January by the sales manager when I called and informed him of the problem that if I don’t like the car that "I can get out of the car when I get back to north Carolina." and when I told one of the owner that he said and I quote "No one in our company would say that." And so he brought the sales mgr. in and he told the truth in front of my father and they told that was a demo car and that was a lie. It was rental car and that they brought only where GM dealers buy cars, which also was a lie. He said it numerous of times in front of my sales person, my mother and father. My father has brought 4 cars from them and they don’t care about holding to high standards. Cause I have called the owner and asked for him to call me back and he didn’t return my call. And the ad for the service department on TV said that they fix it right the first time, which is another lie. My car has been in numerous times for repair and still not fix.
The resolution is that I want is for them to buy back my 2007 Chevy hhr and reimburse me for my troubles and admit that they were wrong. I don’t want another GM car cause there reputation sucks. They don’t stand by there cars.
i had an appointment today with white chevrolet to fix the problem and they said due to the fact that it was a better business bureau contact they are no longer obligated to fix it . they refused to fix it and told me that if i have to get it fix i can go to emporia or any other car dealer. they sale lemon cars for demo.

I have sent letters to the consumer protection agency, the us attorney general, the NHSTA, Better business bureau, CNN, New York Times, Raleigh Attorney general, 20/20 and so on. I will not sending letters and telling how horrible this car is until its recall.
My car has stalled on the highway over 32 times while driving without warning, I was in front of a truck, in the left lane of a busy highway in New York, on different turnpikes and it seems that you don’t care. My gearshift has been replace I couldn’t get my key out, the remote sucks, the brakes had problems, the window has gotten stuck numerous times, and there was a leak. Enough is enough does someone has to die in order for this car to be recalled?

I was told by white Chevrolet in Roanoke rapids in January by the sales manager when I called and informed him of the problem that if I don’t like the car that "I can get out of the car when I get back to north Carolina." and when I told one of the owner that he said and I quote "No one in our company would say that." And so he brought the sales mgr. in and he told the truth in front of my father and they told that was a demo car and that was a lie. It was rental car and that they brought only where GM dealers buy cars, which also was a lie. He said it numerous of times in front of my sales person, my mother and father. My father has brought 4 cars from them and they don’t care about holding to high standards. Cause I have called the owner and asked for him to call me back and he didn’t return my call. And the ad for the service department on TV said that they fix it right the first time, which is another lie. My car has been in numerous times for repair and still not fix.
The resolution is that I want is for them to buy back my 2007 Chevy hhr and reimburse me for my troubles and admit that they were wrong. I don’t want another GM car cause there reputation sucks. They don’t stand by there cars.
i had an appointment today with white chevrolet to fix the problem and they said due to the fact that it was a better business bureau contact they are no longer obligated to fix it . they refused to fix it and told me that if i have to get it fix i can go to emporia or any other car dealer. they sale lemon cars for demo.

I am a 2007 Chevy HHR owner and I have had numerous problems with my car and I see that other people have had the same problems with the same car. You need to recall this car. I have sent letters to the consumer protection agency, the us attorney general, the NHSTA, Better business bureau, CNN, New York Times, Raleigh Attorney general, 20/20 and so on. I will not sending letters and telling how horrible this car is until its recall.
My car has stalled on the highway over 32 times while driving without warning, I was in front of a truck, in the left lane of a busy highway in New York, on different turnpikes and it seems that you don’t care. My gearshift has been replace I couldn’t get my key out, the remote sucks, the brakes had problems, the window has gotten stuck numerous times, and there was a leak. Enough is enough does someone has to die in order for this car to be recalled?

I was on the highway last night and my car cut off while on a bridge and I tried to move over to the shoulder and I couldn’t turn my steering wheel to get onto the shoulder. POOR DESIGN OF THE FRONT BUMPER. THE HOLE ON THE BOTTOM WAS TOO BIG, ALLOWING DEBRIS TO HIT THE AIR CONDITIONER (A/C) CONDENSER AND RADIATOR. THIS WAS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME BUT THE FUNNY THING WA S THAT I WASN'T EVEN DRIVING THE CAR. I TURNED IT ON AND GOT THE AIR CONDITIONER GOING, WHICH WAS COLD AT FIRST. THE CAR SAT FOR A WEEK WHILE I WAS ON VACATION, SO I FOUND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THEY WON'T COVER IT AS A EQUIPMENT FAILURE. INSTEAD THEY CLAIMED SOMETHING FLEW THROUGH IT. CHEVROLET DIDN'T PUT A GRILL IN IT FROM THE FACTORY, WHICH WOULD HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM. WARRANTY WON'T COVER IT BECAUSE IT WAS CONSIDERED A ROAD HAZARD, AND WANTED ME TO CLAIM IT ON MY INSURANCE WHICH I THOUGHT WAS INSURANCE FRAUD. I THOUGHT THEY WANTED TO PASS THE BUCK TO SOMEONE ELSE RATHER THAN RECALL ALL THE VEHICLES TO PUT A GRILL ON IT TO PROTECT IT FROM THE ELEMENTS. I OWN A 2007 HHR WITH 6000 MILES ON IT. I DIDN'T HAVE AIR CONDITIONING BECAUSE THEY WON'T WARRANTY IT, AND I DIDN'T HAVE $800 TO FIX IT. THE GM REPRESENTATIVE CAME TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE WHILE MY WIFE WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP SO SHE GOT TO TALK TO HIM ABOUT IT. HE SAID WELL IT WAS NO DIFFERENT THAN A ROCK HITTING THE WINDSHIELD. I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE LAZY WAY OUT, SAYING THEY DIDN'T WANT TO PROTECT VITAL PARTS OF THE CAR, (RADIATOR, CONDENSER, ETC. BY PUTTING A SIMPLE PIECE OF MESH OR GRILL IN PLACE. THIS SHOULDN'T BE OUR JOB TO MAKE SURE IT WA S PROTECTED. ALSO, THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED WELL, IF WE GET A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT THEN MAYBE THE DESIGNER WILL RECALL IT AND FIX IT. I COULD NOT WAIT FOR THEM TO GET OFF THE LAZY BOY AND FIX A FLAW THEY OVERLOOKED IN THE FIRST PLACE. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE CAR, BUT CHEVROLET HAD TO GET THEIR HEAD OUT OF THEIR OWN BUTTS AND REALIZE THESE WERE THE REASONS WHY THEY WERE LOSING JOBS, AND STOCKS WERE FALLING, CAR SALES WERE DOWN, AND COMPETITION WA S GETTING STRONGER. So now you are aware of the problem, and I will send this letter to us attorney general, Raleigh attorney general, CNN, NBC, CBS and ABC newstations, consumer protection, ophra, 20/20, primetime, usatoday. Until this car is recall cause yesterday scared the mess out of me for the last time. I was told by white Chevrolet in Roanoke rapids in January by the sales manager when I called and informed him of the problem that if I don’t like the car that "I can get out of the car when I get back to north Carolina." and when I told one of the owner that he said and I quote "No one in our company would say that." And so he brought the sales mgr. in and he told the truth in front of my father and they told that was a demo car and that was a lie. It was rental car and that they brought only where GM dealers buy cars, which also was a lie. He said it numerous of times in front of my sales person, my mother and father. My father has brought 4 cars from them and they don’t care about holding to high standards. Cause I have called the owner and asked for him to call me back and he didn’t return my call. And the ad for the service department on TV said that they fix it right the first time, which is another lie. My car has been in numerous times for repair and still not fix.
The resolution is that I want is for them to buy back my 2007 Chevy hhr and reimburse me for my troubles and admit that they were wrong. I don’t want another GM car cause there reputation sucks. They don’t stand by there cars.
i had an appointment today with white chevrolet to fix the problem and they said due to the fact that it was a better business bureau contact they are no longer obligated to fix it . they refused to fix it and told me that if i have to get it fix i can go to emporia or any other car dealer. they sale lemon cars for demo.

2007 hhr lt 2.4
Front brake rotors warped at 13000 miles, and the dealer resurfaced them. They are warped again at 24000.
I received a quote to replace the rotors & front pads for $678 from the same dealer.
I have never had this issue on any car that I have owned.
Damn any good gas mileage it may get, you will pay for it in service/parts replacement.
A full size v8 vehicle has always cost me less overall. That's why I didn't sell my Mercury mountaineer.

I have a 2006 hhr lt2 i bought it last year with 26000 miles on, it now has 61000 on it I love it and would buy another one any day. did have to have the rotors turn that was 85 bucks and thats the only work ive done to it.

I guess there are a few hhrs that are ok. But mine and a whole lot of others posting on sites all across the web are not alright. I think gm needs to go away...Forever. Who wants to start a class action lawsuit against them? My hhr stalls several times per day. It sounds like a covered wagon when it merely traverses a driveway. The auto lights often gets the settings wrong. I have to put something on the light sensor to turn on my dash lights, There is no other way. I did finally find out why my rotors would fry every time it rained. The sliders need to be greased. My brake pads wore to the metal on the front outsides and 50% on the insides. Totally un-even wear. That is what the grease will stop and so your rotors will work like a real car. These are just a partial list of this terrible cars problems. I hate this car. If gm built a flying car that could enter into space I would not buy it. gm is a terrible car company. I pray they do not get bailed out. Oh, my shifter broke too. So did a friend of mine. Hers broke in park. She could not get the key out. Mine broke in gear. I could shift in ANY gear at any time. The dealer said that gm was aware of the issue but only told the dealers how to install the replacement shifters. I hate gm. They truly are the lowest form of life. I am stuck with this sorry excuse for a car. You folks who say good things about your hhrs. Are you in for a shock!

have a 2006 hhr with 94000 miles has bin in shop for a couple of things mainly front in gm put arm on was okay for a while had anoise on pasenger side put cv shaft in still making noise think its a bearing in trans oil leak think its by dip stick have had in shop for stearing colum raido all started around 30000 good luck with yours

I have 55,000 mi on my ORANGE Hhr. Love the car! No mechanical failures. I have an adult handicapped son and it is much easier for me to get him in and out. I did replace the tires with the Goodyear Assurance triple tread. That improved its handling. On a sad note, orange is now optional. Found this out when I looked online thinking upgrading to the best safety devices would be an advantage.

2006 chevrolet hhr has leaks somewhere around passenger door. gilbert posted a message saying it was a little rubber gasket. If gilbert or any one else knows where this gasket is please let me know
