Miley Cyrus Told to Buckle Up
Yes, we know we're not a teen celeb site but this news item definitely caught our eye. Consumer Reports' blog is upset that both Miley Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, are shown riding in a Land Rover without wearing seatbelts. The scene — presumably a real-life segment — takes place in her concert film "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of BothWorlds Concert."
The reason CR thinks this is such a big deal is that 65% of 13-15-year-olds killed in auto accidents in 2006 weren't wearing their seatbelts. Since there probably isn't a bigger superstar among pre-teens and teens, the magazine thinks the scene in the movie is a bad example for Cyrus' fans.
Having not seen the movie ourselves — shocker — we can't say if it was a quick shot of the two getting in the SUV or an extended drive, but there isn't an excuse not to wear a seatbelt once a car is moving.
Note to Hannah Montana: Seat Belts Are Necessary, Not an Accessory (ConsumerReports)

I often wonder why there aren't more effective TV ads in this country to promote seatbelt usage.
I noticed how in the comments on the original article one poster notes how it doesn't matter as she was in the back of the car. I'm attached a link to a UK TV commercial which shows why you should always buckle up front or back.
If we showed more ads like this here, i'm sure more people would see sense:

As if a law and the sense of self preservation isn't enough. Come on. Should we really have to keep telling people to do something that they should have the courtsey to themselves to do anyways?
Why should we have to spend more money plastering the air with ads for people who don't value their life enough to think about whats good and bad for themselves?

So What?! It's not like Britney Spears buckles up her kids. It doesn't matter, good job for those who do (and I do) but for those that don't it's really their choice by law or not. It's the same thing as speeding, yet people still do it whether it is wrong or right or life threatening. I bet just about everyone who reads any auto blog speeds.

Bob and JW-
The problem is that when these people go into the ER their severe injuries are paid for either by insurance or medicare, which the rest of us then pay inturn through higher premiums or higher taxes respectively.
I'm happy to pay my part to help us all have access to medical care, but in return I only ask that you make at least the absolute slightest effort to use that benefit responsibly by reducing your injuries in a car accident by buckling up. I think the law is fair.
Now, if the law were changed such that anyone who gets in a wreck who isn't wearing their seatbelt has to have a credit check before receiving medical care and foots the whole bill themselves, then feel free! Crash away! No seatbelt necessary!

why should we spend more money? so what??? are you guys kidding? we live in a civil society where those of us who are more fortunate help those who are not (including those who are less fortunate in the intelligence and common sense department). that means providing medical care to people who won't take care of their own bodies and smoke.
if Miley Cyrus was mentally challenged, you wouldn't have a problem; so why don't you just think of these people as mentally challenged and help these people out?

Nobody has learned a thing since the unbelted deaths of Princess Diana,Dodi El Fayed, and their driver.Only the belted passenger survived. They have been touting seatbelts for over 40 years, and for all that time the majority of the drivers out there have turned their heads away. When they taste windshield firsthand,or get sucker punched at 200mph by their air bag, only then will they see the light.

They probably just accidentally omitted it from the scene or they did it on purpose because they thought it would ruin one of their outfits.
Who give a rats? 13-15 year old kids aren't driving so they should be in the vehicle with a parent or adult who would make them buckle up. If they don't, it's the parents stupidity. Everyone knows by now that you are safer wearing a seatbelt, if you choose not to it's your choice. If you are killed because you weren't wearing a seat belt, well that's just natures way of weeding you out - survival of the fittest or in this case more intelligent.

The problem is, in the case of back seat passengers, is that an unbuckled passenger becomes essentially an fast moving projectile. If you are buckled in front of that projectile then they are threatening your life, hence the ad.
I know it's down to the individual, but if more were done to highlight the shocking realities at stake, then maybe a few more people would listen.

It would have been good if, following this headline, both Miley and Billy Ray committed to producing and distributing (of their own funds) some public service announcements of the importance of wearing seatbelts. Both are iconic enough, and reach a different age demographic, that the message would have a very positive impact, and might help undo any implied anti-seatbelt message they otherwise presented.
