VW to Add Touch-Screens to All Models in 2009
We recently reported on the fact that navigation system users preferred touch-screen units to any other type of controls. It seems Volkswagen is following this insight to an extreme, adding touch-screen controls to all its models after the 2008 model year.
The touch-screen system will control environmental, entertainment, trip-computer and navigation features, and it sounds like it will even be in models not equipped with navigation. The company says the reduction of knobs, buttons and switches will simplify the manufacturing process. We say it takes this whole iPod Touch to a new level. What do you think? Is this a good move or will it backfire on VW?

It's the sign of the times...I think it's just one more distraction that can lead to an accident.
iDrive, anyone?
As long as it's priced reasonablely a lot of people would go for it. Especially younger people.
Does it shows real time traffic?
The photo is of the touareg 2. there are more than 30 buttons on it. That's why I used it. I think they're saying using a touch screen will declutter the instrument panel.
iDrive isn't a touchscreen either. That's one of the problems with it.
Clutter, schmutter. I agree with Ziggy--this is just another dangerous distraction from the job at hand. A touch screen can't give your fingers/hand the tactile cues and feedback that help you use a control without looking directly at it, so it's going to divert your focus from the road every time you go to use it.
Bad idea!!!!
good point Kate!
Well, as long as VW keeps everything organized and easy to access, this should be no problem... but my biggest worry is about the quality of these new electronics, imagine not being able to adjust the heat because the control screen is busted...
Happymantis,
You got that right! It is deadly over here in the north during winter times without heat!
Dave,
What I am saying is that, even it is not as bad as the iDrive(Actually, who drives now?!), but unless it is simple in its layouts, or else it will be as painful as it is in the iDrive.
Why don't they think about using voice activation plus the touch screen?

Dials are real easy to reach for while you drive. Touch screens require you to focus more on what your doing and what you're touching. I guess it would be good for those that read, shave, or put on make-up while they drive. A touch screen should be real easy for them to handle.
Happymantis,
that is why they keep them seperate, like in Audis, Chevys, Fords, etc. The touch screen would probably just eliminate the buttons on the side of the screen and probaly those that controled the radio functaions, with the acception of the volume knob. overall, the systems would probalby be similar to those in Audis, with a touch screen instead of MMI
Having an integral unit is great when you're at a stop light or in park; it will draw a lot of attention to your vehicle when that unit glows. However, it'll be extremely costly to replace since we're not talking about mechanical parts anymore. I could see it functioning a lot more like a computer + screen. It could play movies, MP3s, open up files, surf the internet, email, etc... all while in park of course. Well, the MP3 task can be accomplished without being in Park.
Many manufactures have already moved to standard touch screens. This isn't new. Every Infiniti sold in the U.S. in 2008 has a touch screen, even if it does not have a navigation system. Infiniti is the first to adapt touch-screens across the line, and others will follow. It will be the standard for the future.
VW needs to figure out how to build a reliable vehicle first before worrying about how many buttons they have on their dashboards.
