Jeep Expands Diesel Grand Cherokee Offerings, Drops Price $1,000

Jeep was one of the first major brands to release a diesel vehicle in the wake of new clean diesel fuel with last year’s 3.0-liter V-6 diesel in Grand Cherokee Limited and Overland trims. For 2008, the company will add the power plant to the Laredo X packages and drop the price on the existing diesel trims by $1,000.

The V-6 diesel engine gets 18/23 mpg city/highway in 4X2 models and 17/22 mpg in 4X4 models, versus the standard V-6 gasoline engines’ 15/20 and 15/19 mpg, respectively. Of course, with 376 pounds-feet of torque, the diesel could also be compared to the V-8 Grand Cherokee, which has 375 pounds-feet of torque and sucks down unleaded at a clip of 13/19 and 13/18 mpg for 4X2 and 4X4 models, respectively. The diesel also tows 7,600 pounds, versus the V-8’s 7,400 rating. While the diesel does have improved emissions, it does not meet the strict requirements of eight states including California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. We're unsure if that makes it truly a clean diesel or not.

I'm surprised to see how "weak" those mileage ratings are for this diesel version of JGC, and I wonder if that's due to the towing capacity or just simple technological reason - that the diesel engine used is a "yester-year" diesel engine. I mean, it's amazing how little the difference is between the Diesel & Gasoline versions, and with diesel more expensive then gasoline these days, plus hybrid engines from GM getting better mileage than this JGC-D, how is Jeep gonna sell this GC-D? There's no money or environmental savings -long or short term - at all on this JGC-D, and in fact, do more environmental damage due to the "old" diesel engine emission!

BTW, OT a sec, just saw Ford's announcing in National TV ad that the Hybrid Escape has the best mileage of any SUV in the world. Not true! And I wonder how I can tell Ford to pull that ad. off the air?

I think this something they should of already done. What they did was force people to buy the most expensive trim if they wanted diesel, now people can get 8-10K cheaper. I wonder if they started listen to their dealers that said expand the offerings of diesel. Its still an improvement of the gasaline engine and greater towing. Gas and diesel price wise its just to hard to predict.

The 56-mpg average on the trek, which went from Land's End on the Southwest coast of England to John O'Groats on the Northern tip of Scotland, is slightly higher than the Qashqai's official 52-mpg rating in England."

The Mercedes-Benz OM 642 diesel engine in the Grand Cherokee is hardly a "yester-year" unit- it is arguably the most technologically advanced passenger vehicle diesel engine yet offered in the U.S. market. The aluminum head, 1600 bar common rail fuel injection system with piezoelectric injectors, offset crank pins, balance shaft, and 4 valves per cylinder configuration are very contemporary features indeed for a diesel engine.

As for the Escape Hybrid's fuel economy, it is in fact the best of any SUV in the world tested under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's procedures, as indicated in Ford's disclaimer.
