Gas Hits $5 a Gallon in California
One TV station in California is reporting a gas station in Gorda, Calif., south of Big Sur, is charging $5 for a gallon of gasoline. The sudden jump in gas prices — California’s usually the highest in the country and is averaging $3.37 as a state — is closely related to a rise in oil prices, which are nearing $100 a barrel. However, over the past few months the price of oil has steadily risen and gas prices have remained relatively flat. A few big oil companies posted large, billion-dollar profits last quarter, yet said one problem was that they didn’t raise gas prices quickly enough to counter higher oil costs.

I know when gas suddenly jumps 30 cents I feel cheated. That seems like a big jump and people won't be buying from that gas station as long as 3.37 somewhere else. Without better explanation of why other gas stations aren't charging $5 it seems like this station is just gouging.
You've got to understand where 'South of Big Sur' is...
It's the sticks! The most beautiful sticks this state has but it's a premium delivery area that's for sure. I'm seeing $3.39/gal in the SFO bay area. And three of my 4 cars use high octane @ $3.60/gal. Needless to say I'm extending my motorcycles service into the cool November 47 degree commute mornings. But it only gets 32 mpg in the winter due to their oxygenating of the bloody gas in the winter months! So now I spew 10% more carbon into the air to save 2% pollution.
using fuel economy.gov i found two stations in cali with $4.00 regular gas. And I didn't search every county.
Companies posting record profits on necessities, does that sound like a good idea?
May be $5 gas is in expensive area where people have gas-guzzlers like Hummer's & Merc's & BMW's and ofcourse Lexus LS600.
AAA gives clear info. California's average is 3.34 / gallon.
When did Lexus made a LS600?
I just wish my paycheck went up like gas prices.. Then, maybe I'd have a fighting chance.
the people of the united states are going to get the screwing they got coming to them, lazy, fat, worthless, useless, stupid, americans. let me let you in on a secret, stop buying coke or pepsi, you'll see gas prices go down. but then again your country is way to damn stupid to figure out my idea.
It's nice to see something in the States costs more than what we pay here in Canada for a change! ;)
Really though, we have been paying anywhere from $3.80 to $4.50 a gallon for the last year here in Ontario!
5$ a gallon....if only it was that cheap here in the UK!!
Working it out roughly, the UK equivillant is about $7.85 per gallon of fuel (and thats just for regular not "premium")....not ideal when like me, you drive a GMC Truck !!
My wife and I ran across this gas station back in 2000 on a trip from LA to San Francisco. They were gouging people back then. They're about the only gas station for thirty miles on the PCH. They offer ONLY full-service. There is no self-serve.
They're carved into the side of a cliff and they prey on unwary travelers. They also have a sandwich shop/convenience store whose prices are just as outrageous.
Stop the whining as you have a choice. If the cost of gas plays such a major role in your life then drive a hybrid, diesel, or 5spd rice burner. Most of you whiners are driving cars not in this catagory so quit your complaining.
This is one "first" California can keep!
