2008 Dodge Challenger Gets Price, Commercial

2008dodgechallenger

Monday! Monday! Monday! Monday Dec. 3. That’s when you can place your order for an all-new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 at your local Dodge dealer. You won’t take delivery until spring, but still…

Oh, you’ll also have to pony up $37,325 and $675 in destination charges to get one of the first year’s limited run.

If the price seems high, that’s because these aren’t base models. These are the high-powered SRT8’s with a 6.1-liter Hemi V-8. Horsepower figures haven’t been released, but they should be close to the Charger SRT8’s 425 hp. That car starts at $36,355, by comparison.

Dodge is keeping numbers of the first year limited to build demand and keep discounts down. Recently, other Dodge SRT models have had cash rebates, something usually not seen in high-performance trim levels. The first year Challengers will come in three colors: black, silver and, of course, the orange you see here, and all will have hood stripes. A plaque with the car’s build number will reside in the cabin; however, we still don’t know exactly how many Dodge will produce for 2008.

Check out the first commercial for the new Challenger below and feel free to sound off on whether the price is right.

this time is ugly! maybe if i was 52 instead of 22 i would appericate this car more... idk as a general comment dodge should try to back to basics to improve their company, instead of making this niche vecihiles.

Spanky

Man $38K is a helluva lotta loot. Since the Commaro is pretty similar let's hope they get the base price right. $20k for a stripped V6 & $26k for a base V8 if it wants to compete w/ Mustang.

Jordan

That's why they aren't making this car for youngsters without taste like you, Alex. Not only does this car look gorgeous (Thank you Dodge for finally growing back some horns), but it will compete in the newly revived Muscle Car market. Didge has never intended this car to be a niche car-it should make big money and big sales.

LM

I'm 29 and my 40 grand would be spent on a BMW. Sure I might not "burn rubber" but that's perfectly fine. This car represents all that's wrong with America.

Paul

I fear this car will bomb.No lesser models, high price, ultra low gas mileage, limited availability, potentially gouging dealers, bad reputation based on the last two cars to wear the challenger monniker (The 70-74 Challenger, the 78-83 Mitsubishi/Dodge Challenger)...you name it.If base models come along a year later,I fear the car might not live that long.Watch Camaro come along, and offer a lesser level, now you have a saturated market there alone.

Damn Alex, I hope you'll be able to type and spell when you're 52! Were you in a rush or have schools gone to pot since I went?
This car does cater to us old timers, true.
But the big three need to start realizing we're shifting big time and really fast to responsible vehicles that tread lightly on mother Earth. At least this ol boy is looking in that direction. Anybody wanna buy a Z3 Coupe, 560SEC, Toyo Land Cruiser, 4X4 Tundra four door and a 1520cc motorcycle cheap? =)

Adam

They will be comming out with a 3.5L V-6, cloth seats..Just wait

Leslie

I'm also 29 and I think this car is beautiful. But then again, I actually grew up with a father who loved working on the old muscle cars of the 60's and 70's so I appreciate them more. They have a style all their own. The only reason I see people who are 29 buying BWMs is because they want the yuppie, I have more money than you image - which only works if it's a 5 series, 7 series or M series by the way! :-)

John

The commercial is lame, but the car is nice. At that price point however, I would much rather have a BMW or Audi. This car will sell in limited numbers because of the price. Chrysler has not proven that they can build a high quality car that stickers north of $30k.

LM

Actually Leslie I'd prefer the great driving 328i over this behemoth. The 335 is just more fun. Both of course with stickshifts. I highly doubt this will match the driving dynamics of that vehicle. And no, I don't want a 5- or 7-series. Maybe the new M3 though.

you really can't compare this to a 335i. Besides RWD they have little in common. The 335i will also cost you at least $42K.

Having driven a number of SRT8s they are great for that , floor the pedal and hold on launch that is pretty awesome.

The Challenger is also supposed to be on a modified or new version of the Charger/300/magnum platform with new interior materials. So we'll get to see if Chrysler has improved interior quality with this one as well. It's important for a lot of things other than just its own sales figures.

If the Camaro comes to market at the prices they are talking about it will crush any chance for this car.

They meant 27K not 37K right? I mean who are they joking?

Like I mention in the post this is the SRT version with a 425 hp v-8 engine. The Charger SRT8 is $36,300.

For the money I don't know if there is more hp out there. The Shelby gt500 with 500hp is over $42K.

If the camaro comes with a 300 hp v-8 like the Mustang GT then yes I would think it would be under $30K. But that's no 425 hp!!!!

ermatthe

Yeah, seems like most of the posters here didn't even read before posting. SRT8s aren't just a trim level with a bigger engine. The Jeep SRT8 for example has brakes, wheels+tires, exhausts, body kit, seats and transmission, among other things, that have been completely redone for performance purposes.

My monte carlo is fresh!!!!

2008 GTO from Dodge?

What are they thinking?

Better yet, they slapped on the retro theme.

Amuro Ray

Will there be people buying this car? Yes. 100% Sure.
Will there be lots of people buying this car? Most likely not.
Will there be enough demand? Well, depends on how many buyers - I mean, if they produce like 1000 or 2000, sure; but if the # is 10000 or 20000, I sincerely doubted.
Who most likely will buy this car? People living in the past (or has close connection to the past, like parents worked on or owned 1 of the previous generations)
Will Chrysler be saved from this car? Most likely not.
Do I believe those who said they'll definitely buy this car without even test driving it or reading any road test review? No way! Unless u don't care 'bou $$$ - people spend time to try out clothings that are much cheaper than this car, and you want me to believe that people will pay almost $40K (with taxes) without trying the car?
What will most likely cause the downfall of this? Gas prices...any time now we'll go pass $100/barrel and never come back down.
My prediction is that this will follow the same fate as the Pontiac GTO, which was also a very expensive muscle car, though not as powerful, at around the price range.

J

Amuro,
That's why I mentioned the GTO.
It seems like Dodge didn't learn anything.
All they know is to blame others for competing with them for the market, but never thought about why customers chose something else. Remember, this is a free market. People have their choices.

i don't understand th eattraction of all that horsepower. with all the traffic and lights, I never even get the chance to redline my base-engine Mazda. So you get to 60 in four seconds inastead of eight. Either way, you're at 60 for however long you're on the highway if your're lucky.

Gorgeous.
Of course it caters to us "old timers" ... we are the ones that are more likely to shell out 40K on a toy. And let me tell you, I know a lot of people that are seriously looking at this beauty.

Al

I'm 34 and I have a hard-on like you would believe for this car! I can't wait to pull up next to a 20-something in his little Subaru STI or Mitsubishi Evo IX and blow his doors clean off. I'm quite certain they'll both look very cute in my rearview mirror. In terms of which car will turn more heads, my guess is the all-new Challenger in HEMI Orange will garbner its fair share of attention and respect on the road.
