2007 L.A. Auto Show: 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

2008bullitt500

  • Competes with: Dodge Charger R/T, Nissan 350Z
  • Looks like: A Mustang you’d find at the rental desk
  • Drivetrain: 315 hp 4.6-liter V-8, five-speed manual transmission
  • Hits dealerships: Early 2008

Ford just can’t get enough out of the venerable Mustang name, can they? We’ve seen all types of special editions since the new design came out a few years back and for 2008, the company is going straight for nostalgia with the new Mustang Bullitt.

Yes, this car is in honor of the famous movie starring Steve McQueen. The paint job is the same Dark Highland Metallic as the 1968 Mustang GT from the movie and engineers even used a DVD of the film to get the exhaust note just right.

Under the hood is the same V-8 found in the standard Mustang GT but with an open air intake — the first in a production car for Ford — and specially tuned exhaust. The suspension was tweaked and more aggressive shocks and struts were used.

Because of the modest bump in power and few alterations, it’s nice to see Ford keeping the price of this special edition reasonable at $31,075, including the destination charge. Because of that price, we expect the limited run of 7,700 for North America to sell out pretty darn quickly. Check out plenty of images below.

I loved that original green fastback. I bought the film just for the noise out of those two cars exhausts. The film was mediocre at best. I think I'd take the cash and buy a nice restoration for less and a lot cooler looking. Not that Ford didn't do a good job of ID on this rendition of a nod to a great looking car from yesteryear.

JM

seems odd that they would offer only a 5 speed manual and only 315 hp for this special edition, especially considering its name.

Why would anyone want to pay a $4,000 premium over the GT Premium? All you have here is an air intake, a strut bar, some aluminum effects. Exclusivity alone shouldn't sway buyers...you can build your own for much cheaper.

You can almost always build your own for less. Upgraded shocks and suspension though are usually pretty pricey as is an aftermarket exhaust system. I think that along with the exclusivity makes up the price difference. Plus this is all covered under warranty. I was saying the price wasn't bad considering the Shelby GT with 319 hp is almost $38K.

Yes, the price is very good for what you are getting. The original bullitt 390 was not a HP monster. They built this car with torque and to turn fast. Also, since it is being built in-house at Ford, it won't cost a crapload. With the x-plan, you can pick one up in the high $20k range. That is pretty dang nice. It is a great car to symbolize the original. From what guys at www.imboc.com are saying, you have to drive it to realize what you have.

Spanky

I stand (sit) corrected.

Korey,
What is the "x-plan"?

Korey

The x-plan is something that anyone can get involved in. Employees of Ford or some of their sub-companies and such are given up to 8 pins to give out to friends and other folks. You get a hold of someone with a pin and get the pin. When you go in to the dealership, inquire if the car can be had with the x-plan. If you buy it with the x-plan, dealerships have to show you the invoice pricing on everything and give the car to you for invoice plus so much percent... It's a great deal. Also, if you special order it, your name will be on the window sticker.

Blue oval forum members give pins out and such. Some people are already making orders for the bullitt with A plan and another plan. X-plan is up in the air right now. Since the bullitt package should be easy to get and is in essence an add-on package to a prem. gt, it should be eligible. I'll find out in about 5 days when I go to the dealership.

Bullit is bullet proof!

very impressive car , but i think they should put more HP on the engine cause it's has heavy body .

Hey, just drove this car today and it is much more than most are saying? It has close to 340-350 HP as opposed to the 315 HP.. It's D rated for insurance purposes and thus the hidden HP... also the torque and the handling and the complete ride, including the seats, leave little room for comparing to the standard GT. Also a $2000 rebate plus dealer pricing offered today on it, and the window sticker with no add ons, just the factory sticker was $32,050.00 and selling offered price to me was/is; $26,000.00 being just over $6000 dollar discount. And that's with my paid off trade-in. SO the ride is awesome, and the deal is pretty dang sweet considering a Red GT was sitting outside with a window sticker of $30,800.00 and this was on show room floor, the Buller package, and it is kinda of like a "sleeper". You'll move way on past the GT, and he has no ideal what's going on, due to the only shown outside item saying it's a Bullet is the badge on the back of trunk. Take care.
