2007 L.A. Auto Show: 2008 Toyota Sequoia

Sequoia500

  • Competes with: Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, Chevy Suburban
  • Looks like: A Tundra SUV
  • Drivetrain: 276-hp, 4.7-liter V-8 with five-speed automatic or 381-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 with six-speed automatic
  • Hits dealerships: Early 2008

The designer of the new Sequoia went so far as to live with an American family to find out what their large-SUV needs were to help on this redesign. We don’t know if all that effort was needed to basically build the SUV version of the new Tundra pickup, but that’s pretty much what we get with the new Sequoia.

Thankfully, it features the 5.7-liter V-8 engine we loved in the new Tundra. The standard V-8 is the same as the outgoing Sequoia’s, however. Surprisingly, the larger engine gets better fuel economy, at 14/19 mpg city/highway with the 5.7-liter and 14/17 mpg city/highway with the 4.7-liter. Those numbers drop to 13/18 and 13/16 mpg for the four-wheel drive models of each, respectively.

Even inside, the Tundra’s Neapolitan color scheme is carried over. We’re guessing it’ll be a terrific-riding large SUV, and the fact that it can tow 10,000 pounds may make it a favorite of the hauling crowd.

that REALLY looks like a tahoe.

it takes Toyota a V8 with 4.7 litres to make only 276 hp? the Q7's V6 uses only 3.6 litres and makes 4 more hp, and its V8 still uses less fuel and puts out 350 hp. it may be less than the 5.7 litre, but also take into account that the same engine puts out 420 hp in the RS4. this truck is NOT going to get the gas milage people are going to expect.

Toyota did a great job. Thumbs up to everyone at Toyota!!! I think I might terminate the lease on my new 2008 Nissan Armada, a full sized Suv, and get this instead.

I’ve been holding my breath for this one and of all the postings from Cars.com today, this one was definitely worth the wait. Wow, what a beautiful SUV! The Tundra looks awesome, but the Sequoia looks amazing. It’s not offensive looking in anyway. I can see families being very happy in this; I wonder if there will be a Lexus version this time around? I hate to say this, but it looks a lot nicer than the Land Cruiser, though I know they compete in different markets, but a lot of their customers also cross shop between the two and I predict a lot of them will choose this over the Land Cruiser. It also does not look much longer than the current Sequoia, but much fuller in size, perfect in every way. Good job Toyota! Now I only wish there were fewer cars on the road and larger parking spaces in between cars. Will there be a diesel or hybrid version of this?

Hmmmm, five point seven, five point seven, why does that sound familiar?

*converts to cubic INCHES*

So did they copy the shortblock Chevy?

Now we know the REAL reason they got into Nascar.

Looks like Toyota has done a decent job softening up the Tundra for something more family appealing. The only weird thing that jumped out at me is the Nav screen location. It may just be the photo angles but it seems the screen is almost on the passenger side of the vehicle and really far away from the driver to the point that I wonder if it was an afterthought. I spent some seat time in the new Tundra, however it didnt have the Nav system, so im not sure how they compare. I would almost say swap the left middle air vent with the nav screen even if it really alters the cohesiveness? of the dash.
