2009 Ford Flex Gets Custom Look

Foosefordflex

As the SEMA specialty show rages on in Las Vegas, we’re trying to keep our distance from most of the outlandish offerings from custom shops that won’t be available to buyers. We would have stayed away from these two takes on the upcoming Ford Flex crossover — due in the summer of 2008 — as well, but since we covered Chip Foose and Funkmaster Flex’s previous Ford concepts at last spring’s New York auto show, we figured we should do it again.

Foose, known for his muscle-car work, adds little to the Flex, with large 22-inch custom wheels sitting on a lowered suspension. Otherwise there’s custom paint and a relocated license plate that doesn’t look good to our eyes.

Funkmaster Flex added his own 22-inch wheels, which are better, but neither set look right when teamed with a family mobile. Otherwise it gets custom paint and not much else. The interiors are custom leather as well, but we’re really wondering why Ford would even bother with the Flex at SEMA. Our only guess is to keep it in the media spotlight and remind people that the vehicle will indeed be on sale in 2008. More photos below.

I sill think it sounds to much like F**kmaster :S

If this lines of this vehicle is anywhere close to the production version, Ford has blown it again. And why would FMF put his stamp of approval on it...

Jay,
These are production vehicles, just customized. Or pre-production versions of the production car. No lines will change.

And to answer your second question: $$$$$$$$$

alex

if this car hit production in anywhere near its current form, another failure for ford. Can ford do anything right, seriosuly??????? their luxury division sucks, bad crossovers, and wheres the big hit? Im confused by what ford does

sulli

ugly boxes sell. Toyota and honda have both proved that with the x-b and the element. I won't buy one (any of them) but this seems like a pretty cool idea to me.

Wow, I had completely forgotten this thing ever existed. Not good for Ford.

sulli

well, that's about right, nothing is ever good for Ford on this site, lol.

Kevin

Until J Mays is fired, Ford will remain Ford. An underperforming, bland auto company, that is best at building and supplying rental cars.

Sulli,

You were partially right. Yes, boxy vehicles do sell, but they are pretty much SMALL SIZE BOXY vehicles - you know, the "cute" factor!

This is a large size vehicle (from previous reports and from pics), so just 'coz it's a boxy vehicle doesn't guarantee a consumer hit.

looks to much like a wagon...they already have the Tarus X for that.

Troy in Ft Walton Beach

Ok a stretched xB. Where's the creativity? Ford needs fresh desinger blood.

Infosaur

It's supposedly a lot bigger than the Freestyle/Taurus X.

I don't understand SUV-wagons either, but sulli's, right they do sell.

You know, Kevin reminded me, this is the exact vehicle J Mays wanted to make when he first started. Google: Ford 24/7 concept, they were like iMac cars. iFords if you will.

I love the retro/modern style that Ford has done here. It's about time they game out with something with a fresh unique look.
