VW iCar on the Way?

Some people in the Cars.com offices went out and bought an iPhone the day it was released. They love their shiny little phones, and now it seems they may have reason to run out and get a new VW if rumors about an Apple/Volkswagen marriage are true. According to various gadget sites, Steve Jobs and VW head honcho Martin Winterkorn met a few days ago to "plan an intensive cooperation with the building of vehicles."

We won’t go so far as to say there will be an iCar, as some have suggested, but we bet it’ll be along the line of Microsoft’s Sync system with Ford, where the computer-maker tries to integrate phone, navigation and entertainment into the car. We can see the “I’m a Ford, and I’m a VW” commercials already.

I agree Kyle C. There are about a dozen or so MP3 players and phones that are better that the iPod and iPhone and cost hundreds less. People can be so sheepish sometimes and just follow the rest of the flock and not look for something better.

I love all my Apple products I have! If Apple can team up to make our iPods and iPhones to work in a cool car, then thats great! Maybe VW wasn't the best choice, but they are suppose to cool and hip.

I am a big fan of choice. I don't buy a GPS from the car company when I can get one for 1/8th price from someone else for example. I don't get excited about an ipod input when an aux input allows me to use ANY mp3 player. Bluetooth another great open standard that allows you to use any blue tooth phone with your car.

When I see things like this all I can think about is getting roped into one company that you have to buy your part and upgrades from. It might work cool but you will pay big time for it. Might be worth it to some people but I like to have choices about the upgrades/toys in my cars. When I saw this same article for the Ford/Microsoft join venture all I could do is cringe thinking about how "wonderful" Vista has been and how lousy getting support from M$ has been. Glad they are announcing this on VW one of the few companies I never consider for new cars with a list too countless and serious of friends/family that have had bad VW products.

I own a handful of Apple products and find that those who bash them generally have spent very little time using them. Technology can be frustrating, but within a given class of products, the Apple version tends to be the least irritating and easiest to use of the bunch.

If VW could make a car as dependable as my PowerBook, I'd consider buying one.
