Ch-Ch-Changes: 2008 Audi A8
Audi says the new 2008 Audi A8 features “major enhancements.” We won’t know for sure if that’s true until we drive it, but the most intriguing thing about the A8 is the fact that the company says it has enhanced the steering to offer more driver feedback, making the A8 a bit sportier. The suspension and sound-deadening also see gains.
We’d take those upgrades, but there will also be a new engine — a direct-injection six-cylinder that’s expected to return decent mileage with a 0-62 mph time under 8 seconds. We wonder if this new engine choice — presumably it’ll make for a lower entry price, currently at $68,900 — will help sales in the U.S. Most buyers of large premium sedans prefer V-8 power to fuel efficiency, even in these gas-conscious times. If they do buy it, will that take sales away from the A6?
The A8 will still be available with its current base V-8 engine, and high-performance W12 S8 models will also return in 2008.

No way the V6 will sell. Lexus only offers a V8 in their LS. BMW offers a V8 and V12 in the 7-series, and Mercedes used to offer a six-cylinder S-Class in the US, but no longer does...
In the above-$30k sedan class, 0-60 in approximately 8 seconds is considered underpowered. I don't think this is an area where Audi should go against the trend.
Can't you have a V8 A6 for that price?

there is a V8 in the A6...
the new engine should open up the luxury of the A8 to more people. some people dont WANT or NEED so much power, but still want the luxury. As the article said, it should help make the A8 lower in price, which would give it an edge over its BMW, Lexus, and MErcedes counterparts in terms of sale volume.

I thought the S8 had a Lamborghini derived V-10, like the S6. Also, outside of the US market, smaller engines are quite popular. BMW offers the 730 and Mercedes has the S280 and S350 in Europe. I'm glad Audi is choosing to bring more of these models over here.

DT: Maybe the V6 weighs less? The less weight over the nose might make turn in more responsive. Even with aluminum the A8 is one big girl to bring to the dance.
