Ford Kuga: A Stylish Compact SUV for the Rest of the World

We keep telling anyone who will listen that the auto show season is just like the NFL’s: it never ends. The first of the major international auto shows is still two months off, but word of a significant debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show just came across the wires. Ford will unveil the Kuga, a compact SUV based on the well-received Iosis X concept that debuted at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

All we know now is what we can glean from the sketch above, and that the Kuga will be a 4x4 crossover. The Kuga will go on sale in the spring of 2008 and will be sold across Europe. Perhaps new Ford CEO Alan Mulally will like it enough to bring it to the U.S. Unlike GM, though, Ford has been slow to share its global lineup.

Thank you Ford for once again missing the point. America is ready for edgy designs. The Ford EDGE or Flex or lack of flagship sedans...the Tarus re-badging effort doesn't count as hitting the mark. Someone in Detroit has to be batting for the other team or point shaving within the company or there is a weak chain of command and no one wants to step up and take a risk.

I buy a new SUV every two years. Well, my company pays for it, but all the same they pay retail value. And I get to choose which one I get.

You know what? Based on what I have read and seen, I would buy the Kuga if it were in the US. I really would. But I absolutely HATE HATE HATE the Taurus X (aka Freestyle 2.0) and Flex designs. I would look like a... I do not know, someones mom? A passerby would have to double take to think I was male in one of those. Simply put when there are better engines and styles elsewhere, I would never buy anything Ford is selling. Only the Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, from Ford, are automobiles I would consider. And the CX-7 only won because it was the edgiest crossover I could find.

Ford, wake up! Notice how the edgiest cars sell the best in America? With quite possibly the exception of the Camry (still edgier than most Fords), a car that is likely to grab someone's attention sells here. Bland, everyone-can-like styling does not sell as well as edgy-only-a-few-like styling. Why? Because of those few who like it, they all BUY IT. Where as for the few who do not like it, there is an equally edgy but slightly different styled car from another automaker that suits them. Either way, a person does not end up buying the car that they can look past.

I am really, really, really tired of these things. Still this looks a HELL of a lot better than the X-cape (from upside-down monthly payments maybe?)

Still Ford might just ad it to the line in 2012 when it too looks old and dated.

How many utes does Ford sell now?

Escape, Edge, Flex, Freestyle=Taurus-eXtreme!, Explorer, Expeition, Expedition, Excursion.

Cars? Um Mustang and an old focus and old Mazda and a Crown vic,,, oh wait they canned that.

What sells cars is reliability and style. Ford has neither and won't until a change in management occurs, or Ford is bought out by another company.

I don't think Ford is doing too terribly in the reliability dept these days.

Yeah I don't think they've been doing to bad in the past either. I bought my wife a Used 99 Sable with 139k miles on it and I'm thinking of going for 250k with it. (I use it for road trips)

I drive a Ford product a 1994 Mercury Marqis.
It has over 200,00 origiinal miles on it. It still runs so smooth.
