Does it now have standard ABS? I remember it used to be an option on the current Dakota and Ram.

WHEN are they, Daimler-Chrysler, as inventors of Bluetec clean diesel technology, gonna capitalize on warming public sentiment to these cleaner, quieter torque-monsters and drop the 3.2 litre Mercedes (E-,ML-, GL320) diesel engine in a Dakota?

Not everyone needs a Ram. Not everyone is hooked on less durable and less powerful gas engines.

Oh, and this V8 upgrade still falls short of what every prospective buyer thinks of when they think Dodge: a HEMI.

T_H_R_O: We're in complete agreement on the diesel thing. Many have been saying that for years. Really sad they're so out of touch on certain things. But i guess the same can be said about SUV's and full size trucks getting bigger every new model. I think it's stupid to make the durango twice as big as originally, for example. Dodge eliminated the regular cab dakota and shut out low cost fleet sales that were starting to open up (not to mention people that want a small truck but don't want a total piece).

Unfortunately, most people use emotion to make purchasing decisions -- and only then -- logic to justify them. If this habit was the other way around -- who knows what crazy sensible things the car companies would come out with.

Also to your last point, the 4.7 costs substantially more to produce than the hemi 5.7 (truck version). It's really a brilliant, compact design, much like most non-USDM technological V8's. It is incorrect to indicate it is inferior in any way but displacement to the 5.7L. Not to mention the 5.7 would have packaging issues in the dakota unless they bloated it even more.

So, if the 5.7L is too big for the Dakota, why can't they make the 4.7L a Hemi also? I love the Dakotas and I've owned two now. My only complaint with the daks is that they have under powered them for too long.

BTW, I've seen a 6.1L go into an 05 Dakota. I'm not sure if the had to do a whole lot of restructuring on the frame or not, but the guy that did that lived in Texas I believe. He also had SRT8 badges put on it for fun.
