Volkswagen Taps Wilco for New Commercials
Well-respected alternative rock band Wilco has gotten in some hot water from fans for lending songs from its latest album to Volkswagen for a new ad campaign. VW has always used interesting soundtracks for commercials, so it’s no surprise they’re not using Chris Daughtry for their next campaign. We really don’t see why Wilco fans are complaining about the commercial; they should complain about how dull the new record is instead.
On a side note: What’s everyone’s favorite song from a car commercial?

As lame as their ads are, Pontiac has always used some fun and interesting quasi-indie music in their commercials. I can't recall what models the commercials were for (probably not a good sign), but on more than one occasion I've searched online for music used in a Pontiac spot.
Two good songs spring to mind, one from a Volkswagen ad, oddly enough. They used Son Volt's "Chanty" in one. Honda used Alexi Murdoch's "Orange Sky" for an Element commercial. I thought both of those were OK.
Either way, I'd rather here a song a like than more boring, overrated classic rock.
Modest Mouse in a Nissan Quest commercial long before they were cool
I find it very disturbing that Nissan is using Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" to sell Altimas.
Generally I only remember the stuff I can't stand; but I realized someone fairly cool is doing VW's commercials when they used Nick Drake's "Pink Moon."
Ol' schooler here so ya gotta like Bob Seger's "Like a Rock" for the GM pickups a few years back. It actually lasted a few years didn't it?
Whose gonna ride that chrome t(wo)(hree) wheeler? for the motorcycle ads...
Mitsubishi's ads have always been ones to remember because of the music they used. The new Outlander commcercial. The new Lancer commcercial and all the Eclipse commercials. It seems they have the best music w/ them.
what the hell does chris daughtry have to do with any of this?

uncool. the new Wilco record is amazing - its just lame to underappreciative music snobs - and I like that they are in Volkswagen commercials, so now I can hear their awesomeness more often
Daughtry would be the most popular, generic rock act I could think of while Wilco is more distinctive.
Daughtry's music has managed to push 3 million albums off the shelves in a little over six months. Volkswagen might want to rethink its "interesting" marketing ploy.
That's why I can't stand "Like a Rock" and I love Bob Seger.
Breaks my heart. I don't have a problem with them making a buck either - that's why I buy every album and pay for every download and buy tickets to every show - but this blows. It like when Bowie sold "Changes" to Pampers!! please stop the madness! Those songs are my songs not some ad guys scheme to sell cars - and that's coming from a marketing guy.
