One Mustang, One Color: 2008 Shelby GT Convertible Revealed
The specialty numbers coming from Carroll Shelby and Ford don’t seem to stop. The latest go-fast Mustang from the pair is the 2008 Shelby GT convertible that was officially announced this morning. It features the same guts as the current Shelby GT (not the GT500), producing 319 hp. The convertible also sports a solid roll bar and comes in one color: the Vista Blue scheme shown here with silver stripes.
The other news is that the Shelby GT coupes will also be available in only this color combination. The current black and white schemes were limited to the 2007 models. There were less than 6,000 2007 models built, and the 2008s will be even more limited, with a planned production of approximately 2,300. They are slated to go on sale in the fall. Prices will be announced closer to the on-sale date, but expect coupe prices to remain similar to last year’s $36,970 figure.

I may get alot of flak from Ford Fans on this but damn the torpedoes im sayin it anyways. I think with so many variants on the mustang, Ford has managed to run this (at one point incredible design) into the ground. I admit, I love the look of the the current gen mustang and who wouldnt love to shake the hand of Carroll Shelby. However I believe they have flooded the marketplace with these niche variants, to the point where if the casual passer by were to see the car they would not really give it a second glance. A decent example of marketplace flooding would be the RAZR phone, (I know, im comparing a car and a phone... two totally different things but follow me for just a sec). When it first released the thing went for $400+. Even so the phone sold like mad, so Motorola started cranking them out and in a ton of different colors and types and increased their vendor range. Now with the market flooded you see deals where you get two of em for free when you sign up. They can barely give em away and motorola lost profit and revenue for it. End result their company is in financial trouble.
Im sure nothing that grand of a scale will happen with the mustang but my point is that in my opinion, this can only hurt the image and if Ford isnt concerned about that I think Mr. Shelby should be.
I think the car is in need of a refresh. Here's just a thought, if theryre thinking of a variant, how about a first party Eleanor kit? I can hope right?
Phaeton,
I think they're doing this for two reasons.
1. It's cheap and they make a lot of money off of them.
2. The model is three years old and a redesigned Mustang is in the works for 09/10 so special editions keep buzz going for the existing model.
You can have it in any color you want . . . as long as you want Vista Blue.
