New Ford Taurus X a Top Safety Pick
Hot on the heels of the renamed and redesigned Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans earning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top safety award, Ford’s renamed and redesigned Taurus X three-row crossover has also earned the designation of Top Safety Pick.
Previously called the Ford Freestyle, the Taurus X now features more safety features, a larger engine and new exterior styling. Recently, Ford began an ad campaign touting the new Taurus, formerly called the Five Hundred, as the safest large sedan you can buy. It’s the only non-luxury large sedan that’s earned the Top Safety Pick award.
Currently, the Taurus X is the only non-luxury three-row crossovers of its size to earn the nod. To be fair, many other new comparably sized three-row crossovers have not yet been tested. The Taurus X should be on sale next month.

so now Ford has two crossovers?

no ford just made the freestyle called the taurus x because they think the name will sell unreliable crappy product.

Yes, ford has the Taurus X (Freestyle) and the Edge. They both target very different groups. Freestyle was hampered by its engine- the new one is winning awards so I think an already good design has just been made better, who cares about a name. Oh, and I put my name on that.

a station wagon will not sell

You should see it in person before calling it a station wagon and saying it won't sell. It's actually quite tall, more like a chopped SUV.

A friend has a 3 year old Freestyle and it has been trouble free. They are quite happy with it. Been on some longer trips and it is quiet and comfortable. I agree it needed more power but the new engine looks like it will easily take care of that. Having also test driven a Freestyle, it sits up higher then a wagon like an Outback but in corners it does not feel top heavy like an SUV. Most will not give it fair consideration because of the lack of an H or a T on the grill but it is a decent vehicle. The one we shopped was well equipped. We decided against it because of the third row being smaller then we wanted, at that time sluggish engine and a higher price then we wanted to pay for it.

Actually, I think with gas prices now, a real Taurus wagon would sell better than this disguised SUV. Call it crossover, call it whatever you want, it's still an SUV.

I think a Fusion wagon would be cool.

Dave T.-
Interesting concept. I could see Ford doing it. Or perhaps something a bit in between, like the Malibu Maxx?

No MAXX!!! Oh man I hope not. I just like regular wagons and wish there were more of them. The fusion has such interesting style I'd like to see what kind of wagon they could do and you know it's possible since the Mazda6 its based on has a wagon.
