No Car Adapter for New iPhone

Iphone

The world at large has pretty much taken the day off to go absolutely insane over the new iPhone. We love new gadgets too, so we were interested to see what kind of accessories would be available for the iPhone. As of now, Apple has the most accessories available for its new baby, but missing from the list of add-ons is a standard old car adapter.

Now, we don’t know if maybe they just didn’t put it on the site, but with so many people plunking down $599 and up, you think they’d want as many accessories as possible available now rather than later.

You may now resume your iPhone-induced work coma.

If the iphone is bluetooth (which I'll bet it is), they probably plan on you using that feature to interact with your car's audio/entertainment/road-distraction system.
Apple has demonstated in the past that it's willing to leave out features that it considers to be "old". Remember when the imacs first came out with no floppy drive? They really try to push people to move to the newest tech. Whether you view that as good thing or not I guess is up to you.

The iPhone has an iPod connector on the bottom. So most, if not all, iPod adaptors will work, including car chargers and so forth.

will at&t stores carry ipod car chargers?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the iPhone being sold at Apple Stores exclusively, under a special contract with AT&T?

Yes Ryan, only the Apple stores will have the iPhone for sell. Not any phone stores. Of course eBay has it for $1,000 plus! The Cingular (ATT) website does not even have it up with a price on it's site.

The iPhone is for sale at apple stores, apple online, and at authorized AT&T stores.

thanks carlos.

Also don't pay any inflated prices. My neighbor walked into an apple store at 7 p.m. last night in chicago with no more lines and bought one in all of ten minutes.

I don't have an ipod yet and willing to wait an especially long time before buying this over-priced phone. Considering how often phones break or get chewed up by dogs I can hold off. But for all who enjoy, congrats.

Hey Dave,
Just an fyi. I was able to pick up the iphone @ a local at&t store. There was also available at the store a car charger made by griffin that has adapters to charge both the iphone & an ipod. The price was $29 for it. Nice thing about it is that the car adapter part can be left in your car while you disconnect and tote the usb cable into work or home and plug it into your computer to charge. Also available was a myriad of bluetooth headsets and cases. I highly recommend the jawbone noise cancelling ear piece. The phone is pretty wicked and an article covering the map/satellite/directions portion of it may be a nice addition to your site. I was contemplating purchasing a gps device for my truck but now with the phones abilities i have no need for one.

Phaeton,
We have a few iPhones in the office I'll look into the Map stuff and see what I can do. Thanks for the tip.

I have a Kenwood 719DVD headunit with iPod dock and an Infiniti FX45 with Nissan OEM ipod connector. They both worked fine with the older iPods, the Kenwood even allowed us to watch videos on the DVD screen. Both do not work with the iPhone. It charges, but music or video do not play through to the car.

That's really interesting TT. We hear BMWs work with it. But that's the only one I've seen so far.

I can confirm that the Griffin Car Charger and Black Griffin iTrip work with the iPhone.

I have a Kenwood DDX-7017 double din unit, and it works just fine with the iPhone.

When you first plug in the phone, you get a message saying "This device was not designed to work with iPhone" It asks you if you'd like to turn on airplane mode to reduce interference. Just tap "Cancel" and you're good to go.

All my playlists show up just like a regular iPod. iPhone gets charged as well.

The DDX-7017 never played videos from a video iPod, so I wouldn't know if the newer head units will play videos from the iPhone.

I just bought the Griffin Car adapter for AUX input, and I took it back because it didn't work. It charged fine, but the audio didn't work. The audio came out of the iPhone speaker, but not the aux output. I guess the iPod accessories are kind of hit or miss with the iPhone.

I'm sitting in my BMW and realized my iPhone doesn't work. I even bought a ipod male connector cord from Circuit Citys Mac department. Of course they said it would work. No deal. But I am able to search the net for solutions on my iphone.

I also have the Iphone it works with the Eclipse units fine. It will work through the headunits as long as using there adaptor the Ipc-106. Charges it also.I even held a conversation (with my earpiece) while it was charging through the Ipod cable fromt the ipc-106 just had to make sure the radio was turned off or the ipod would play through my blue tooth earpiece while in the middle of my convo.

@david "The iPhone has an iPod connector on the bottom. So most, if not all, iPod adaptors will work, including car chargers and so forth."

Unfortunately this is not the case. I have the Pioneer Car Stereo which is fully iPod compatible, but I get a warning when I connect it to my iPhone 3G, telling me it isn't compatible. Sure enough, it won't charge my iPhone and, although I can play music through it, if I try to select "Albums" on the head unit, it crashes back to whatever song was last playing.

Similarly, my iPod Dock does not work properly with my iPhone 3G (I get the same warning and it doesn't charge).

i have the same problem as david. I must be
insane for purchasing the iphone. It does
not work with my new six hundred dollar
car deck. Also have ipod, nokia internet tablet, psp, palm pilot, and windows pda.
I gotta get a life.
