A Look at the Next BMW M3's V-8 Engine
We don’t normally geek out about gearhead stuff here; we’re more about the average-Joe car shopper. However, when it comes to the next BMW M3, we do gush a bit, and we’re guessing most car fans will appreciate a look at the first V-8 engine to go under the hood of one of the most respected cars on the road.
First thing we have to say: 420 horsepower! We like that number; 295 pounds-feet of torque isn’t as impressive, but we’ll still take it. Max revs are said to be 8,300 rpm, with 85% of torque available at 2,000 rpm. The 4.0-liter V-8 is also one of the lightest ever made at 445 pounds.
All these numbers are making us even more excited than we were seeing the M3 concept a few weeks back.

Now if they can just get it to shoot fire out of the tailpipe.......
Stupidly complicated, hard to work on because of how it will be sunk back under the dash it will be (like the I6 was), and probably will cost out the rear-end to get just an oil change. 420 hp out of a 4.0L V8 though is quite respectable, sadly its a BMW.
Just because you don't understand the engine or know how to work on it doesn't make it "stupidly complicated" or difficult to work on.... In a world of computer controlled engines and nanometer precision, I'm afraid 99.95% of the population won't be tearing apart almost any late model car in their garage.
There's nothing stupid about a lightweight, 420 hp V-8 engine.
Sweet engine that's for sure. And the design of the body! They must have gagged and tied up Mr. Bangle in the janitors closet while they got it approved. Hey Dave, why do I have to see that over at Autobobile's site. No press kit for you guys?

That has all the photos. We're on top of things!
I like the old one better myself.
It's nice to see that I'm not the only one that is sad that BMW went from making sports cars to luxury cars. Nowadays car companies add weight, then add a bigger engine, and keep the cycle going.
The next M3 will be nice, but I think it's going too far from it's roots as a street-legal track car.
I wonder if this engine will be used in the next Lotus Esprit. It will go well with the Esprit because Lotus' slogan is "Performance through light weight" and this engine is very light.
Only 445 pounds, that is insane. Lets see an American car do that.
An example of good german engineering.
