More Super: 2008 Buick Lucerne Super is Here

Lucerne500

Unlike the Buick LaCrosse, the Lucerne already had a V-8 engine in its CXS model. What does the new Lucerne Super do to top that? Besides the revised grille and front end, its 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 gets tweaked to put out 17 more horsepower, bringing the total to 292 hp.

There’s also the addition of stability control, brake assist and magnetic ride control to improve handling. The Lucerne Super comes in only four exterior colors, rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels and, of course, has the  “Super” badges. The Lucerne Super looks like a nice upgrade for the lineup, but we’re surprised it won’t go on sale until spring 2008. Until then, check out the photos below.

Can see the seniors flocking to the dealership right now to pickup their joyride. those things are beyond ugly. why do Detroit automakers insist on living in the past, ford bringing back taurus, chevy bringing back the nomad, are they hoping to bring back some of the glory days. Bad News: times have change and the automotive industry now is on global spectrum and doesn't revolve around detroit like in the past. Tell them to get wit it!!

Juan Carlos

since the cadillac cts is onm the same platform, why not do the cts-v engine here?

wade

when the hell is the chevy nomad coming? I haven't heard of that yet!

Infosaur

Oh COME on! BJ did the EXACT same post word for word on two different pages! What are you a Ford ad copy writer?

And Juan, the CTS is RWD the Lucern shares it's platform with the DTS (Deville) which IIRC is the last FWD Caddy.

wade

so chevy nomad? Yes? No?

tommy blackston

I wish Buick would quit copying the Ford Taurus in it's design department.

The Taurus looked good in it's time, but we all must move on.

I have a few points I'd like to make:

First, I like what Buick has done to the Lucerne. The car is quite handsome, and the first Buick I would ever seriously consider owning.

Second, nothing short of scrapping the Lacrosse and starting over is going to help it sell. The front overhang is too long, the interior is uninspired, and the whole styling exercise is half-hearted and blah. Try again, guys!

Juan Carlos

i will buy this car at any trim level. but i won't be buying the super for its speed. an extra 12 hp? give me impala ss/grand prix gxp power. give me 310hp or higher and i will go down the dealer in the morning. give me a traditional american muscle car that is also near-luxury. something that will compete with the infiniti g35.

i am in my early 30's and the sort of customer they need. my mother can drive the cx trim and i will drive the super trim. let her have 200 hp and i get 320 or something.

dan

that is such a wrong comparison..

"give me a traditional american muscle car that is also near-luxury. something that will compete with the infiniti g35."

G35 is nothing close comparing to a traditional american muscle car, its a japanese piece of crap.

Get a G8 or the new Impala when it comes out, geez!

Expat

I like the Lucerne, elegant for a luxury car. Who thinks that a Camry is a great design? Come on.

I would like to applaud gm's efforts with finally giving buick a vehicle whose styling doesn't make you want to dose off behind the wheel. However I do believe there should be a more powerful V-8 availble to be called "super." Also I'd like to add to the jerk making the comment about the G35 comparing it to an Impala SS or a Pontiac G8. There is no comparison, its amazing how nissan/ infiniti can do with a V-6 what most american made cars require a V-8 to master. Furthermore if you check the 0-60 times, slalom, handeling, fit and finish, and reliability I'm sure that the foreign brands would stomp the american competition, sad to say. Oh and did I mention they are doing this with a V-6 not a V-8...

2Slick57

Don't forget TokyoTinkerToy lovers, the G35 requires premium gas, has as much room as a coffin and costs 35K. For 25K, my LaCrosse CXS will walk over any G35 running on regular gas.

Amuro Ray

Why the heck do we always have a whole bunch of idiots making utterly stupid comments like 2Slick57 or dan? For the 1st thing: no matter how you try to trash the G35 or other Japanese vehicles, you aren't going to change the fact that these "TokyoTInkerToys" are way better than many of the GM & Ford products - which is reflected through sales (not to fleet) and reviews (when's the last time you've seen a Buick winning a lot of praises? The G35, otoh, has always been since it's intro.). Beside, in response to 2Slick57's comment - 1st off, you can use regular gas on G35, though it may hurt performance, so please do research, and 2nd - you, and probably a small bunch of usually GM supporters, who, and if, can afford the G35, wil go for the LaCrosse. In fact, I don't even think that you've driven a G35 at all! I've driven both, and I can tell that in NO WAY can the LaCrosse be any where close to, or even better, than the G35. Please make constructive comments instead of stupid ones like yours. This really reflect the level of education and personal characteristics of yours, you know...l

"To each his own." There will always be those who love foreign brands and those who love domestic brands. There are many legitimate positive attributes to each kind. This forum should be used for that kind of discussion. Hurling insults at each other accomplishes nothing.

M3,
Where can I send a thank you card?

J

If I have not mistaken, the Lucerne is a FWD, right?
If I am right then GM still didn't get it.

Bonneville GXP, Impala SS(V8), now Lucerne.

How many times they have to try to get the 3 letter abbreviation? RWD!

M3

Dave T.: Jeez, it just gets OLD after a while, doesn't it???

J: Holden in Australia will be GM's salvation, as they will build the next generation of RWD cars for us. FWD and V8 never made sense. But soon we should have some great RWD cars.

J

M3,
There is my point.
Why does GM even bother to say those are high performance vehicles? They are just high output vehicles, not performance. FWD and performance really can't stay on the same sentence, unless there are other limitations.

steve

I am the proud owner of a 2006 Buick Lucerne, CXL trim with the Northstar V8. I bought it over Labor Day weekend last year. I paid $31,500 for a car with a $38,500 window sticker. Brand new with only 20 miles on it. It's the greatest car I have ever owned, and I have owned several in my 30 years of driving. At 46, I fall below the demigraphics of the stereotyped Buick owner. I have friends who own both BMW and Lexus cars who actually like mine better, primarily because you are getting pretty close to BMW and Lexus performance at half the price. Notice, I said "close to." This is for those who just have to have BMW, Lexus, etc. for the prestige of having those names. I do not plan to drive my car on the Autobahn, or in the German or Japanese mountains. Nor do I want to drive it on our mountain roads at 60+ mph. That would be stupid. However, I do want a car that handles well in day to day driving, and a car that also has great throttle response, and the Lucerne accomplishes both of those tasks just fine for my needs. Don't knock the car unless you've driven one. Buick gets a thumbs up from me for the Lucerne!

Questions

J - You say that FWD and performance cannot be said in the same sentence, right? Then what about the hot Hondas and Acuras (excluding the SHAWD)? The Civic SI is not a performance oriented car because it is FWD according to you. I bet there are a lot of people out there that would disagree with you.

Amuro Ray

Questions, J is absolutely right. You gotta understand 1 thg: Street racers and real performance, race track oriented vehicles are 2 different things. Have you ever see:
(1) FWD cars in any of the US (Nascars, Indy) races?
(2) RWD cars in any of the JGTC races (I saw 350Z, GT-R, NSX, RX7/8, and Supras);
(3) Formula 1 races in Europe?

The reason is very simple, with FF layout, the front is just too heavy. If you are looking at straight road, then there's no difference. But there are many curves in race tracks. To be honest, if you've owned and driven a FR or RR layout sports cars, you'll understand what J means...

P.S. In case you wonder why Civic SI is so popular, yes, it's a nice car, but it's also very cheap - relatively speaking. Have you seen any RWD sport oriented cars at around $20K?

Amuro Ray

Oops, 2 typos:

Have you ever seen...

&

(2) FWD cars in any of the JGTC...

MM

BJ, where on earth do you get this nonsense that Buick is a "senior's citizen" car, or that this is just Detroit "Living in the Past". That is completely absurd. I can't believe you made tha statement. Buicks are for anybody who wants them and likes them (I had two of them myself as a teenager). Times have indeed changed...but there is still a market for big American cars. The number of them you still see on the road proves that. If any REAL changes are needed today, perhaps it is softer suspensions and tires once again.....the tendency today is for too many low-profile tires and stiffer springs on cars that don't need them.....and shouldn't be getting them.

Lopez

Great car, difficult to find one used for a good price, it is holding its value. There always be market for fast sedans that are elegant at the same time, like Mercedes does every day.
