Infiniti G37 Coupe Debuting at New York Auto Show

G37

Don’t let the name fool you: The 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe is the new G35 coupe, but the name reflects a larger engine — probably a 3.7-liter V-6 with significantly more than the 306 hp in the G35 sedan. We’re just guessing, of course, but we’ve been around long enough to speculate very, very accurately.

We’ll find out more April 4 when Infiniti reveals the G37 in full, along with an EX concept. We’re not going to speculate on that one too much, but it could be an SUV of some kind.

is there sill going to be a Nissan skyline? I herd it might be a infinity not a Nissan

we were discussing the skyline here as well because it will have more horsepower than this obviously (perhaps 400?) and the logical thing would be to put the 3.7 in the next 350Z, a Nissan.

So where would the Skyline do the most good as a halo car? Nissan or Infiniti? Which car would it steal the least amount of sales from?

We don't know and I sure wouldn't want to make the call.

Sweet heaven mother of...

This is one v. sweet coupe. As for the Skyline GT-R: it'll be a Nissan, as stated in the officical Nissan websites, http://www.nissandriven.com and http://www.nissannews.com. It'll be priced ABOVE the currect 350Z. I guess it's major competitors are Porsche, BMW M's, etc. From Larry Dominique of Nissan Corp., "1. The latest generation Nissan 350Z, introduced as a 2003 model, is still strong enough to be named Road & Track’s "best enthusiast car under $30,000." But value aside, the Z is giving away its star status in the lineup to the upcoming GT-R. What happens next with the Z and how do you keep it relevant to enthusiast buyers?

As a world-class supercar, the GT-R is the "icon" of the franchise – and its reputation and status will only grow stronger once the next generation hits the global market. But the Z is Nissan’s volume "icon" which helps maintain our brand strength to the mass market.

The current 350Z and 350Z Roadster continue to be well received by sports car buyers. The Z delivers upon the promise of great sports car performance at a "reasonable" price tag. The price of GT-R will keep it above the mass market, but Z is attainable by most. The next generation Z will continue to deliver upon that promise. It will have considerably more performance than the current model and give a visual stimulus beyond today’s Z. This value and performance proposition will be even better than today, continuing an almost 40-year tradition as Nissan’s brand icon."

Yes, they have it on the nissan site, but things change in the auto biz this far out. I'm not sure many people are going to be ready to pay $40K plus, or whatever the GTR will eventually cost, for a Nissan. Remember, that's what killed the last generation of Supra/300ZX/RX7

Yeah the GT-R is icon for Nissan blah blah. But if they want it to be successful in the US, they better give it to Infiniti. Nissan doesn't compete with bmw, infiniti competes with bmw, maybe they could use it as a 6 series killa!!

To those who reckon the Skyline GTR can't be a Nissan in the US because of the cost, if it really isn't possible to sell a (relatively) high-priced sports car in anything other than a luxury brand, how come the Corvette isn't a Caddy? And why is the Viper a Dodge not a Chrysler? And why was the Ford GT not a Lincoln?

with the exception of the Corvette none of those cars sell in the numbers Nissan is looking for.
And like I mentioned before there is really recent history of expensive Japanese sports cars going belly up from poor sales/expensive stickers.
that was my point. We'll see if it sells but I don't think it will do much for Nissan at this point.

To be honest, I am not expecting the GT-R to be anywhere close to 40K, but rather close to 60 to 70K.

The GT-R is a "niche" sport car, and seriously...it's highly unlikely that it'll sell in numbers. That's why it's NOT gonnabe cheap :(

However, Carlos Ghosn himself has stated that the GT-R is a Nissan, and there may be a reason for that. 1 thing that people must understand - this is an expensive SPORT car not because of it value packed feature, which is what Infiniti is all about - luxury, leather, sound system (Dolby 5.1), service - but because this IS an expensive SPORT car to begin with - simply 'coz of performance reason. In fact, i would expect to see more plastic/synthetic leather/sports seats etc. rather than many of the luxuorius items we can see in Infinitis.

Another comment 'bou the JPN sports cars of the 90's (which I've one still - 300ZX TT): I don't think the cost of the car alone killed the sales; rather, it's the insurance! I mean, people could always go for leasing or 2nd hand if price is a factor, but when u had to pay insurance that can buy u a brand new economy vehicle in just a few short years...that's scary, and that's probably why sales have dropped significantly. Look, it didn't only happen to N. America; it happened in Japan too!

For fans of the GT-R, we don't need it to be an Infiniti in order to pursuade us to pay that $$$ price tag; and for those who don't consider the GT-R simply 'coz it has a "Nissan" name tag intead of Infiniti due to its price - they really don't deserve to drive/own this car, as they have utterly no idea what the GT-R is all about :)

(Sorry, but now this is completely off topic - this is for the G37. In Japan, the new G35 is actually called V36 350GT, so it's very possible that, in addition to the engine displacement increase, Nissan is naming the coupe as V37...just my guess.)

Graham the Corvette is a Caddy: the XLR.

I'd like the skyline to be both a Nissan and an Infiniti, but then that's my answer for everything. It occurred to me that the last companies to expect a lot out of a $40k sports car were Pontiac with the GTO and Chevy with the SSR. Yikes.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of room under the Nissan name above a 370Z. If I were in charge of Nissan I would probably sell it as a Z variant (like the Corvette Z06) even if it doesn't share any of the Zs components. Then I'd use it to introduce a high performance line for Infiniti. However neither of these options would give it much attention. I have to agree with Amuro Ray, Infiniti is currently too sedate for a GT-R

Whatever they decide can't posibly be as stupid as VW resurrecting the Phaeton.

Lil'Tom,
What about Elise? Boxster?

J,
Those cars have both been great successes, however Lotus and Porsche are performance brands with no mainstream cars. I certainly wouldn't expect the GT-R to fail like the SSR, I just have to question what it will mean to Nissan's bottom line.

I hate to ruin a perfect streak of way of topic comments but I wonder if Nissan should produce two version of the G. I don't have the data to back this up, but I have to believe BMW sells a lot more 328s than 335s. Nissan could easily undercut them both and become more appealing to people who aren't horsepower crazy.

LT,
Yes BMW sells more 328s than 335s but the G35 sedan is priced against the 328 not the 335 and outperforms the lesser model there. That's why we like the G35 so much because of the value vs. performance you get.

Lil'Tom, look under the hood of the XLR. It's no Corvette under there, and anyone can see that the body is different. Just because it shares a platform doesn't make the XLR a Corvette. (And in any case XLR sales are minimal.)

What Nissan REALLY needs to sell the GT-R is SUPERIOR dealer service. It's one thing if the monkeys are messing around with Sentra's, but once a service tech wraps someone's $70k 'pride and joy' around a pole no amount of good press is gonna bring that customer back. GT-R's should only be sold by TOP dealerships, and should maybe be sold using the Japanese domestic model. If you are interested you make an appointment on line and a "product specialist" will come to YOU and show you the car (a demo) then you will order the car and it will be delivered to your DOOR. Make the buying experience unique. Then they can justify the cost.

After all, most GT-R buyers are already used to car that can't simply be picked up at the corner lot.

I thought this car was supposed to have 330 hp?

why is the new skyline gtr going to be called the infinity g35 or g37 coupe? i personally think its ridiculous that usa cannot bring or allow the legendary skyline nur! the nissan skyline gtr v-spec II r34 nur is a legend and has never been brought to united states!

no one said this was the Skyline. The skyline will be called the Skyline GT-R and we're hearing it'll be a Nissan.

And to further the comments, yes, u can buy the Skyline GTR V-Spec II R34-N here in the US. Some companies in California (L.A., I think) have made in street-legal...don't remember if it's all 50 states or just 48 states. Price is around (and over) $80K. if you r such a Skyline freak (which I would say, welcome to the club), then you should know why the previous R32-34 series weren't imported here. It's THE ENGINE - the way it's mounted with the turbos - no space left to convert it into a LHD vehicle. The RB26DETT straight 6 used on the R's is a different (and better) engine than the VG30DETT used on the Z32TT. Now u c why it was officially imported?

very tired,very wanna be car
