Great Car Faceoff: The Final Eight

Gcfx5

Oh boy. This isn’t going to go well. Yesterday, the closest match was between two of the most popular vehicles in America, the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado. The votes were tallied, and the F-150 won by the narrowest of margins. It could’ve been worse: Up until around 10 a.m., it was 50/50, and we handle ties with the higher seed moving on to the next round. The higher seed here is indeed the F-150. Our top seedings were determined by overall sales, not editorial choice like the lower half of the bracket. Thank goodness there was still a majority for the winner, though.

Sorry, Chevy fans, we were betting on the Silverado, too.

Of course, there were three other contests yesterday, and you can check out the winning votes here.

Today we open the voting for the final eight vehicles, with the last four going at it tomorrow. Make sure your vehicle makes it that far. We’re guessing that the BMW 335 vs. Nissan 350Z matchup will be the most hotly contested.

The Great Car Faceoff

Looks like it's going to be a close one between the Altima and the Cooper.

Who will prevail?
The Small fun car?
Or the Midsize fun car?

Just to help people with their vote choices, my 6'7" tall friend loves driving around in my '07 Altima because he has plenty of head and leg room, regardless if he's in the driver's seat, or the passenger's seat.

That, and I recently towed a 400 lbs motorcycle on a trailer with it from NYC to Denver CO this past weekend, averaging 70+ mph the whole way across on the intersates, and getting mid 20's mpg doing so, even with a pretty heavy headwind from Indianapolis all the way into CO.

BJ

Yo Bladecutter, ur friend should be in SUV or truck, not a car. The winner of faceoff is going to be either a nissan or bmw(odds to bmw). Sorry americans

LM

Why should he be in an SUV or truck? That's a fairly lame judgement. Don't 6'7" tall people deserve fun to drive vehicles? There's plenty of room in the 335. I'm 6'3" and could not have the seat all the way back in 335 coupe. I'd take that over any SUV/truck any day.

On a second note, even if the 350z wins out over the 335, there is no way the Z is better than the Bimmer. No way. Nizzan fans are delusional if they think so.

Z

350z owns u all

Bladecutter

To BJ:

My friend actually drives a Subaru Outback wagon, due to all the extra headroom, but that car can't compete with my Altima for legroom, and my Altima is great for headroom, even for him. I'm not that short either, at 6'1".

Not to mention that my Altima kicks the crap out of his Outback when it comes to the fun to drive factor. Since we live just North of Denver, we take the car up into the mountain roads, and blast around quite a bit.

Car corners great.
Too bad the Mini crowd is stuffing the ballot box. Imagine going from two days of votes with around 700 votes to today with over 1700 votes so far... I think there's some funny business going on. ;)

BC.

Bladecutter,
The Mini online community has long been known to be one of the largest of any fans period. I've learned that at Autoblog, at MPH and it is no different this time. They are relentless and they love their Minis. Its just a LOT of people. There is no stuffing.

Dutch

Sorry Mini guys. You guys might have a following, but the only reason the Mini-Altima vote total is close to the Z-335 total is because all the Z owners voted for the altima. Why do you think the lead is decreasing instead of increasing?

LM

Dutch, the Altima is still gonna lose. Mini fans will come out of the woodworks. I think the Mini would smoke the Z too.

Dutch

Uh ... 75,000+ members on a certain website Z forum says your toy car is going to get its a$$ handed to them. A novely car can only go so far.

James

Unfortunately I have never driven a Nissan Altima, nor a mini, but have sat in both at the car show, the altima does have amazing leg room and headroom, I too am a big guy, at 6'4 and 350lbs there arent many cars that I can fit into, and when the mini first came out at the car show, I was with a friend who is only 5'8 and he fit fine, and he was laughing saying I wouldnt be able to fit, and so was I actually, the salesman said oh sure you can, he said they were designed to allow people at almost any height, up to either 6'6 or 6'7 not sure, I had plenty of leg and head room, I was amazed.
Of course I also have a big car, 2004 Chevy Impala, though next year, when my lease is up, I will be open to any car in my budget that will be roomy enough for me, Dodge Charger is one of them or maybe a Titan (Nissan) I have had enough cars, I think its time for a SUV or a Truck

ToyotaTakingOvergm

surprise to see the Z dominating the 3 series like that, thought it would be a close one. and also the X5 smashing the F-150. but either way a foreign plate is going to win and THATS THE BOTTOMLINE CUZ I SAID SO!!!

Jason

I work for one of the largest dealerships in the country, so I drive just about every type of car all the time, probably as much as the cars.com guys. In no way is the 350 better than the 335. The nissan is aging in every aspect, regardless of recent bump in power and hood design. The 335 understands refinement, something the 350z has no clue even exists.

Matt

Refinement, yeah... refinement really helped out the 335 in the votes.

billNme

This post is meant from James, the guy who thinks a sports car should be "refined". Buddy, you drive cars for a dealerrship, you don't test them, build them run them through a course so get off it already. ANYONE that thinks that the true sign of a superior sports car is "refinement" knows ZIP about sports cars. Tell Ferrari or lambo that their cars are't equal to the BMW because they are not refined! LMAO, bud here is the simple and plain fact, I have come up against two 335s in my Z, and both got a great view of my exhaust. the Z is a 4 year old car, the engine in the 07 brand new. What about that is again? Oh wait, doesn't Breakdown Motor Werks AKA BMW still use a 30 year old Mcpherson strut set up? yeah talk about aging...

BMW, owned two, will never touch another one.

350Zsupreme

The mini-cooper is a cool little car. It has a long heritage and should be respected. However, the Mini-Cooper is not an equal to the 350Z not in the same league.

to all those that think the Z should have lost, it didn't. the numbers don't lie. don't talk to me about the guys from the Z fourms blah blah blah, because there are just as many in fact maybe even more BMW forums and I personally saw them talking about this one one of them mobilizing their guys for the vote.

guess what, people in general like the Z better then a WANNBE sports sedan.

Marty McFly

the rsx is still faster

BJ

Word up to billNme, Jason should stick to washing the cars at the 'dealership' after a big snowstorm, rain, or whateva nature throws their way. One

I have been fortunate enough to drive a 335i and own a 350z. I wish I could own both as they are very different and nice in each of their own perspectives. The z just feels so much more of a sports car -- especially after test driving the 335i. The bmw is a nice car as well, packed with luxury and refinement -- making it the better daily driver. Speed between the two cars is not much of an issue as both the 07 350z and 07 335i are capable of roughly the same 1/4 times (both around a 13.3).

I agree with the comment on sports car not needing refinement. Look at the c6 z06 with the plastic roof screws and some of the older ferrari's exposing glue in the creases of the dash. Some sports cars on the market do not even come with power windows, a/c, or a nice stereo. The z is simply more of a drivers car than the bmw, while the bmw is a fun daily driver.

blaze

Why isn't the RSX in the running!?! It's faster

Hey all you Beamer fans. Let's see what you can get for $26K. Fact is, the Beamer doesn't out-sport a 350Z nor out-handle a 350Z. It certainly out-pampers a 350z, and out-costs a 350z. Looks are subjective, but I don't think the 335i looks as good as a 350z.

Don't get me wrong, the 335i is a very good car, I'm sure, but don't discount the handling, power, looks and price of a 350z.

Mini's are going down whether they like it or not. The Z outdoes anything Mini. The Mini is just a poser trying to out-do our beloved 350Z....Mini fans beware...were goin to be all over this like white on rice on a paper plate in a snowstorm

FlintGauge

350Z FTW! Mini's are cute. Z's are sexy!

Yup....squirrels are quite homosexual...

Rob F.

First of all, two of the finalist are not cars. They are trucks and how can a truck be included in the Great Car Face-off? So we essentially have two cars remaining: the Mini Cooper and the Nissan 350Z. Kind of like David vs. Goliath and we all know who won that contest. I think to put things a bit more of a level playing field, the Mini should be a Cooper S. Or on second thought that might tip things in the Mini's favor. Never mind.
Avid MCS driver.

My wife mini fits on my F150 truck, so does it mean we have a winner? Looking at both of them in our garage, I think my Z's rear tires are bigger than the Mini...akward to make a comparison between these two vehicle. The Z defintely brought sexy back, while the Mini is cute? My wife often drive my Z and the only times I've driven the Mini is to get it service, so there is a reason why that is....the Z rocks!
