Great Car Faceoff: SUV/Minivan Round 2 Results In

Gcfsuburban

We know SUVs and Minivans aren’t as exciting as sports cars, but it seems there are still some fans of certain models out there. The Chevy Tahoe was the big winner with the widest margin of victory with the fight between the Ford Explorer and Chevy Suburban being the tightest. Check out the full results.

Then go vote on today’s bracket, where the second round continues with Pickups and Luxury SUVs. The most significant matchup looks to be the Ford F-150 against the new Toyota Tundra. Let the commenting begin.

Tundra vs. F-150. There is no way the Tundra will win. Ford fans will come out of the woodworks for this one. This whole round will be a domestic-romp.

It's a shame, there are some really nice foreign designs out there (X5 for one). But as this contest has shown, the 'buy'-American folks still think a nameplate means they're buying American.

Hmm, Ford owns Volvo (made in Sweden), but the German BMW is made in South Carolina and the 'American' Silverados come from Mexico. Hrmmm.

No kidding! After the whole Crown Victoria "scandal" I'm suprised cars.com didn't fold the whole voting thing altogether!

we're not giving up that easily.

tommyblackston

I don't know what the commentors on here have against the Crown Vic. They can't seem to get over the fact that it did so well. Guess as long as they contiue to hate anything made in their home country they won't be able to see past their nose.

All I can suggest to them is to go out and drive one for a while.. Maybe even rent one for a week or two. Then they will know why many of us are loyal to our country and to the Crown Vic or in my case it's sister, the Mercury Marquis.

BJ

Who's going to win the chevy vs chevy...oops, i mean gmc. Thats how dumb this contest is piting the same trucks against each other. BTW, if the TUNDRA doesn't win its category, it just goes show the classic automotive bias against foreign brand made in 'merica. the TUNDRA is all-new and the F-150 is old.

tommyblackston,

I don't recall I am living in a Country named Canada.
Isn't it the country where the Crown Vic produced? (St. Thomas, Ontario)

I've actually ride in a Crown Vic before, and to be honest, the driver's seat is not my type.
It is more like a sofa than a car seat, better reserve for grandpa and grandmas. Without a proper seat, I don't even dare to push it at all.

BJ,
I am not surprised to see that result.
I still remember Chevy brags in their commercial about the New Silverado won the Motor Trend Car of the Year. What they forgot to mention is that, out of the 5 only contenders, 4(Yes, 4 out of 5!) of them were from GM riding the same GMT900 platform. They were: Cadillac Escalade EXT, Chevy Avalanche, Chevy Silverado, and GMC Sierra. The only competitor was Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
GM was gonna win one way or the other 3.

BJ

Yo J
You thinking like me dude. that was some 'real' competition for the MT Truck of the year. This is just classic american automotive bias, everybody is on the side of the ford/gm/chrysler, especially on the side of gm. but we all know the TRUTH!! one

SecretSquirrel

F-150 is a better truck than the Toyota. The only thing Toyota has going for it is it's name. If I wanted a toy, I'd buy a Toyota, if I wanted a work horse, it's all American baby.

BJ

Yo SecretSquirrel, if the F-150 is good why there's such a deep discount to sell it to the public, obvisiously its not that good cuz people would spend whatever on it to get one. Therefore, the only reason people get them is becuz they are cheap. got it. The CAMRY doesn't sell with alot of discount, did you notice that. Customers were actually chasing down the car-carryers so they could their hands on before they 'disappear'from the car dealership lot. Got that buddy

SecretSquirrel

If the Camry was so hot, why did it get knocked off in the first round by a grandma mobile? hahahaha F-150s sell like hot cakes while Tundras sit at the dealer lots and rust.

Bill

I have been reading these comments by some people. Why are so many people against buying american cars. These same car manufactures are the ones that helped build our country and helped defend it from these same foreign countries that tried to destroy it. These people say Ford are made in Canada, Chevys are made in Mexico. Maybe they are. But our companies have to compete in a global economy. Like it or not they still have to stay in business. Because it seems like a vast majority of Americans would rather support a foriegn economy. Where ever American cars are made they carry the nameplate of an American company. I am proud to be an American and proud to own American cars.

Oscar

Hey BJ if the Tundra is so good why they are giving $2000 on the new Tundra and to sell the old ones they where giving 5000, if I remember right for the first year and a half the F150 sold like hot cakes but when gas prices whent up they had to give discounts like everybody else, right now the only thing that the F150 needs is the Boss engine and the 6 speed with those 2 things it will blow the Tundra out of the way, ohh but wait that will happen by next March when the new F150 comes out to hunt the Tundra and Silverado

J

SecretSquirrel,

The Camry lost because of the voting system's flaw, so just take the lost of being beat up by a Mini already. BTW, Mini was a British car company, and it is owned by BMW (A German company) now.

Bill,
I hate to tell you this. A name plate means nothing more than the name itself. It makes no difference if it is NOT made in USA. Keep in mind that most of us don't prefer foreign over domestic "brands", but rather for the reliability. If a Chevy beats Honda in reliability, I would buy a Chevy. Everyone wants every dollar worth of their money.
I understand that you think those companies are the one that build the country, but on the other hand, they are using your loyalty and sending their job to oversea to cut cost and more importantly, cutting job in the US.

One rule of thumb: If it is made in the US, it is domestic, I don't care if it is a Chevy or Toyota, it is still a domestic. If it is made in Canada, Mexico, or anywhere else in the world, and needed to be imported into the country, that is import. By using the NAFTA, the company avoided the import tax cleanly.

SecretSquirrel

"I hate to tell you this. A name plate means nothing more than the name itself. It makes no difference if it is NOT made in USA. Keep in mind that most of us don't prefer foreign over domestic "brands", but rather for the reliability."

LOL, so that's the reason why in every Toyota truck commercial they have to mention that it's made in America? Face it, people who buy trucks buy American and Toyota will have to bend over backwards to make them change their minds. Why do you think they got those retarded commercials airing now that show 40-70 runs and bigger brakes? Sad thing is, those who buy trucks don't give 2 cents for that stuff. lol

J

SecretSquirrel,
You are avoiding the question about what is domestic and what is import.

Or you are just simply quoting the wrong thing.

SecretSquirrel

I didn't realize there was a question. But if you must know, a domestic company is a company whose headquarters are located in the US of A. Regardless where the vehicles are being made, the profit comes back to America which strenghtens our economy.

A foreign company is located on some island half way around the world. It is the company that took advantance of the gas shortage 2-3 decades ago and poisoned our lands with compact cars and our people with an illusion that they are better than domestics. Now they are at a point of taking over our land by building their factories here and calling themselves American. They aren't fooling anyone(except morons who got lured into their traps), all the profits from their sales goes back to the island half way around the world thus doing nothing for our economy.

J

So what you mean is that those company don't even pay the workers that work here?
Haven't had such a good laugh for a long time.

Joe Mahoney

I have not seen a valid post in regards to Mr. squirrels' last answer.
I think he is correct on the destination of the majority of the funds generated by the sale of each vehicle. Foreign Automakers pay far less to workers in their U.S. plants that the big 3 do. They also are run non-union. Even with the assembly of a percentage of vehicles in non-U.S. plants, Autos sold by the big 3, provide more to the U.S. economy than foreign automakers.
Foreign automakers opened plants in the U.S. to build vehicles for that market. The big 3 have done the same with the Chinese market. Buick is currently the number one brand by sales and volume. They are taking advantage of reduced production and shipping costs, by utilizing plants in the Country the vehicle is to be sold in. A Buick is still an "American" car by all acceptable definitions, even tho a percentage of them are produced over seas. Therefore by this logic I state that a Toyota is still a "Japanese" car, despite a percentage of them being built outside of Japan.
If Americans continue their current buying habits as it relates to autos, the big 3 will go bankrupt, and become a distance memory. If/When that happens we will have to rely upon foreign manufacturers for all our transportation needs. Have we not learned from the dependence on oil? where will America be if we truly become a "service" only industry? To fix our economy and ultimately provide careers for our children, we need to increase exports. With the weak dollar, we are in a great position to increase exports. Now if we could only get fair trade agreements and support the Automakers that are still in business, we would be able to provide a future for our kids.
