Fires Spur Chrysler Recall of 489,000 SUVs

Things aren’t going well for the Chrysler Group these days. Falling quality scores aren’t being helped by a massive recall announced Friday of more than 489,000 Jeep Liberty and Dodge Durango SUVs. The news comes after dozens of fires were reported. There were two incidents of minor burns in the Liberty and none in the Durango. Surprisingly, no accidents were caused by the problems, and the fires were caused by different mechanical problems in each vehicle — a blower motor in the Liberty and instrument circuits in the Durango.

Chrysler also issued a recall of the new Dodge Avenger due to faulty door latches, but those numbers are miniscule compared with the Durango and Liberty. The recall covers the 2004 – 06 model years for the Durango — 328,424 vehicles — and 2006 – 07 model years for the Liberty — 149,605 vehicles.

Owners can call Chrysler at (800) 853-1403 regarding the recalls, but notices won’t be sent until April for the Durango and May for the Liberty.

when will Chrysler learn quality is more impotent then style I like dodge but this is not helping

How does this happen? Why do car makers make such stupid mistakes? No wonder there has been rumors of Mercedes-Benz selling Chrysler. Unless I'm wrong Ford and GM has had fewer recalls then Chrysler so far. I never have liked any of the brands in the Chrysler group, and this is not helping to sway me over to them.

IMHO Chrysler has done the best of the big 2.5 in the styling dept. with vehicles like the 300, Crossfire, Ram, Challenger, but they need to put the same kind of effort they've channeled into innovative styling into quality, as well.

egh chrysler needs to give it up! I don't know which is worst..ford or chrysler giving the american auto industry a bad name...its pulling down GM's reputation!

My two Dodge Rams have been the most reliable trucks I have ever owned. I have owned one Silverado (never again) and two F250's (Ford dealers are the worst). I currently have a Ram 2500 w/ 160k and have not had a single issue outside of standard maintanance. When I'm due for a new truck I'll probably take a real close look at the new Tundra as two of my peers have the old Tundra with the Lexus V8. Their engines are so quiet and still pull super strong. One has 220k and not any issues yet. Toyota appears to build a good truck.

no they build good trucks for sissies that don’t use there trucks for work!

Bad for the Chrysler group, great news for Durango, Liberty and Avenger owners. These faulty parts had compromize the comfort and safety of its owners and so Chrysler has the responsibility to take a necessary action to this. The Durango, Avenger and Jeep Liberty parts-will be repaired or replaced. This will increase the expenses of the Chrysler Group and will be a big loss.

As Matt posted, "no they build good trucks for sissies that don’t use there trucks for work!"

My question to you Matt is if you don't have anything constructive to post why even post? You are immature.

matt

I was talking about Toyotas.
