BMW's New 507-hp Wagon: M5 Touring Debuts

M5touring500

The Geneva Motor Show is fast approaching, and BMW just unveiled a lineup including the all-new M5 Touring, or station wagon to you and me. Both the regular 5 Series sedan and wagon have been slightly updated this year, but the M5 Touring is a first. It mirrors the M5 sedan — which costs a pretty $82,500 — in horsepower, with 507, with the same V-10 engine under the hood. But the M5 Touring also has station wagon utility and an available panoramic roof, so the kids can watch clouds whiz by as you hit 62 mph in 4.8 seconds.

There’s no word if the M5 Touring will come to the U.S. or how much it will cost, but we’re not overly optimistic. BMW only sold 72 of its 530xi wagons in January, compared to 527 530xi sedans. Mercedes-Benz does sell its 507-hp E63 wagon in the U.S., and perhaps the need to compete will lure this new M5 across the pond. Check out the photo gallery below and tell us if you want to see the M5 Touring running errands in suburbia.

I'm afraid the bikes would fly off the roof when I shift into 2nd.

I have a four year old and a set of 18 month old twins and I hope BMW brings the M5 wagon to the U.S.. The E63 wagon is simply to sterile. It has no soul not unlike the rest of the MB line-up. Let me think, 507 hp and a six speed tranny. WOW!

a 8-cyl GM or Ford usually had about 130 HP--that was plenty!!!!!

The first thing I thought when I saw this was the Lancer Evolution IX Wagon.

It has half the power, cost less than half the price, and has AWD.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't make the M5 Touring AWD too since the E63 is AWD and wagons seem to lean that way and the 5 series wagon is AWD. Weird.

I just can't see many guys with M5 status cruising around in wagons.

Dodge Magnum SRT8 wagon, anyone? Very similar performance for less than half the cost of the Bimmer. There are aftermarkets tuners who can get even more power out of one and you'd still save money.

I know plenty of guys that would buy the M5 wagon in a heartbeat, including myself. I have been waiting for this car for nearly 10 years. The Mercedes E63 is not the same as the M5 due to the transmission, and the lack of soul, and for a lot of family guys, the M5 wagon is just the right combination (not a compromise) between practicality and driver fun! Besides, there is somewhat of a funky counter-cultural movement into wagons recently that makes the uniqueness of an M5 wagon even more appealing than it may have been to folks 5 years ago, when SUVs were still rising in popularity.

I buy one in a heartbeat...the Saab wagon just doesn't cut it anymore for me.
