GM Adds 5-Year Warranty to Certified Used Cars

There’s no doubt certified used cars are a booming segment in the automotive industry. Shoppers have responded well to the idea of getting a warranty on a used car, even if it’s a short one. GM currently offers a three-month/3,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on certified cars, but will add an additional five-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty to every certified used vehicle for the Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and GMC brands. Cadillac and Hummer already have a six-year/100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. Saturn will announce a similar certified program later this year.

Well it's about time! I would have loved to buy a GM certified used car, but the 3 mo./3k mile warranty was a joke. Glad to see they're getting serious about backing their cars better, not just used, but new as well.

Funny, I've been buying used Jap cars for more than 15 years and have never even cared what the warranty was. I guess if the quality is suspect then a warranty is important. I think I'll stick with my ultra reliable used jap cars and save the ford-gm-chrsyler rides for my vacation rentals.

Too bad you don't offer that extended warranty on lease vehicles. My 2004 Grand Prix came brand new without valve oil seals. All four turn signals have burnt out twice now, had to have fuel injectors cleaned due to the rough running (probably from no valve oil seals for the first 4500 miles due to the dealership telling me it was a "break in period" as I was going through a quart of oil a week with smoke billowing out my exhaust) and $700 in brakes which included all rotors and pads. Leather seat cracked within 3 months of owning car and I have seat covers. Mind you all my driving is done on the freeway, so the braking issue was not from city driving. Sunroof broke, parts are falling off inside. Car now has 45,000 miles on it and has fallen apart more and more since 36,000 when warranty runs out. I work down at Ren Cen, owned GM cars for 15 years now and I'm done. Got the biggest lemon of Grand Prix's ever. Got the shaft on having to pay for all these issues too. Got till 2008 on this car and can't wait to dump it.

Amazing what extremes a Grand Prix can be. My brother just finished his company lease on an 04 with 130K miles and it was not in the shop once for anything except routine maintenance. The brakes did not even need service till 75K. I drove it once, seemed an enjoyable car. Good luck on surviving yours Sue.

that is the only problem i've heard with grand prix, they are excellent on reliability and they have won many quality awards...So we'll have to treat this like a foriegn car and go by reviews and not believe a word you said. sorry sue!

Great news for GM car owners! Vehicle warranty is one of the qualities that car buyers are considering when choosing a car. But i think not all the GM parts-http://www.replacementgeneralparts.com, are covered with this warranty. There must be a condition or limit on how this warranty will be valid.

"CERTIFIED" IT MUST BE A JOKE.
I HAVE BEEN SOLD A "CERTIFIED" CADILLAC AND IN EFFECT IT WAS NOT. GM NEVER HEARD OF A CERTIFICATION ON MY VEHICLE. THIS SALE WAS MADE BY A PROLIFIC DEALER IN COLUMBUS OHIO AREA. THUS FAR I HAVE REQUESTED A FULL REFUND ON A PURCHASE. TIME WILL TELL WHAT HAPPENS.
